ISLAMABAD: Troubles for former Pakistans ambassador to US Husain Haqqani and his political masters are bound to grow as the recently retired ISI chief, Ahmad Shuja Pasha, Thursday shocked many in the corridors of power with his surprised appearance before the memo commission.
He not only stood by each and every word of his affidavit that he had submitted before the Supreme Court, but also expressed his dismissal to Haqqanis version on the memo scandal.
In his affidavit, the former spymaster had given credence to the version of US businessman Mansoor Ijaz in the memo case and now he has told the commission that he was not satisfied with the denial of Husain Haqqani.
The poor Haqqani continues to be getting discredited before the Qazi Isa commission because of his actions and inactions. Thursday was yet another day for Haqqanis embarrassment as his excuse for not appearing before the commission was disapproved by the commission. The commission was not satisfied with Haqqanis medical excuse and thus rejected it, but stopped short of terming it a cooked up reasoning to avoid his appearance before the commission.
Earlier, he wanted to give his testimony through a video link from London because he was desirous of having being treated in the same manner as the commission took care of Mansoor Ijaz. Later he came up with an excuse that he feels threatened to come to Pakistan because of Mansoor Ijazs connections with 24 intelligence agencies of the world.
But both the commission and the Supreme Court did not find any weight in his excuses so rejected it. On Wednesday, he came up with some newly developed health problems for which he contended that he could not travel to Pakistan. Health certificates are a routine tool for postponement or to dillydally a case in any Pakistani courts, but the three respected judges of the memo commission were too smart to wonder that how he could travel between Washington, Massachusetts and Florida for his otherwise routine media reasons, but cannot appear before the commission in Islamabad.
The memo scandal, which according to the government and its sympathizers in the media, was already a dead issue, got a new boost on Thursday as the former ISI DG personally appeared before the commission for being one of the most important witnesses. His arrival was a surprise for most of the people and a shock for those in the corridors of power. The words of the former spymaster that he is satisfied with Mansoor Ijazs corroborative material to prove his version, but is not satisfied with the denial of Husain Haqqani, means something like setting alarm bell ringing for Haqqani. Pashas testimony before the commission also belied the perception of a behind the scene deal between civilian and military establishment over memogate.
The commission has so far completed the testimony and cross-examination of two most important and fundamental witnesses in the memo scandal - Mansoor Ijaz and Lt Gen (R) Shuja Pasha. The third witness - Husain Haqqani - is hesitant to appear before the commission despite having assured the Supreme Court that he would cooperate with the commission and would even appear before it in a just four-day advance notice.
Mansoor Ijaz has already offered everything that he had claimed to have in possession. He has also offered his BlackBerry sets to the commission for forensic evidence, withdrew his privacy to enable the commission to crosscheck from RIM his version of BBM messages, provided to the commission certified copies of his phone record and shared with commission judges hundreds of his emails exchanged with Haqqani and others.
Haqqani, however, claims to have lost his BlackBerry sets, forgot even their pin codes and even cannot categorically deny or admit MIs claims about BBM messages on the basis of no recollection of the (BBM) messages as reproduced (by MI).
General Pasha also confirmed that Haqqani was the guest at the presidency after his removal from ambassadorship and during his stay in Pakistan while he was not allowed to go outside Pakistan without the Supreme Courts permission. Nothing is clear as yet if Haqqani would come to Pakistan to appear before the commission despite the fact that his party rules Pakistan.
It is, however, interesting to note that the same government and its top functionaries have successfully haunted Mansoor Ijaz not to come to Pakistan and take part in the commissions proceedings. After Mansoor has already recorded his testimony from London through a video link, Haqqani is now shying away and reluctant to come to his own country and help the commission complete its finding in the memogate, which according to Haqqani is a pack of lies.
