Tripura, Mizoram Approach MEA To Ferry Essentials Via Bangladesh​

Tripura and Mizoram have approached the External Affairs Ministry to bring essential supplies and transport fuels via Bangladesh as the rail links have been cut off for the past nine days.

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has cancelled all goods and passenger trains till June following unprecedented landslides triggered by uninterrupted rains in Assam’s Dima Hasao district. NFR’s Lumding-Badarpur single line railway route via Dima Hasao mountainous district connects Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and the southern part of Assam with the rest of the country.

According to NFR’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Sabyasachi De, in the hill section under Lumding Division, all trains were cancelled till June or until restoration of railway lines, which were disrupted due to the heavy rains and landslides on May 14.

Tripura Food and Civil Supplies Department Director Tapan Kumar Das said that the state government has already approached the External Affairs Ministry to take up the matter with Bangladesh government to bring essentials and transport fuels including petrol to meet the requirement of the state.

“We can ferry essentials and transport fuels using the Dawki (in West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya) — Bangladesh-Kailashahar (northern Tripura) route. Few years back also the essentials and fuels were transported through the same route,” Das told IANS on Sunday.

The official said that there are stocks of fuels and essentials in the state now but as the railway authorities have cancelled trains for a longer period, we have taken alternative arrangements to meet the requirement.

“Efforts are on to transport essentials, transport fuels and other basic items by road via Assam and Meghalaya. We are in touch with the Assam and Meghalaya governments. But these supplies are not adequate for the longer period,” Das said.

In Aizawl, Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs minister K. Lalrinliana said that the state government is considering the possibility of bringing in essential commodities via Bangladesh. “We have sought the approval of the External Affairs Ministry for transportation of essential goods through Bangladesh,” the minister said.

The Indian Air Force helicopters are carrying essentials and fuels from Guwahati to rain and landslides hit Dima Hasao district. The situation in the hill section of the NFR in Dima Hasao district remained serious on Sunday as rain continued to batter the area.

“Out of 56 affected locations and some less affected locations, restoration work has been completed but the work in major affected areas is yet to start due to the inclement weather,” an NFR official told IANS from the NFR headquarters in Maligaon.

The official said that the railway engineers and workers are working on war footing round-the-clock to restore the vital railway lines to reinstate the rail link with Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and southern Assam.

In this process, we ruined our environment and livelihood of many Bangladeshis dependent on that river. Has India reciprocated that amazing goodwill gensture? Our PM sent 1500 tons Hilsa fishes during Durga Puja festival in West Bengal two years ago as a goodwill gesture. You know how much West Bengali crave for that fish, yet one day after, India banned onion export to Bangladesh without prior notice and created a sudden crisis. Onion price jumped to Taka 300 per kg. These type of one sided goodwill gesture bringing us no good, India is still killing our citizen at border, still conducting propaganda against Bangladeshis swarming India to eat milk and honey, still opnening gates of flood water when Bangladesh experiences flood, still denying us Teesta river water, still creating a lot of unequal trade barrier and so on. Indians do not even think those as goodwill gesture, they think of those as a bribe to help keep Awami League in power. This is the reality.

Instead of following the examples of mean minded Indian, BD should remain generous. BD must not allow Indian citizens to suffer because the Indian govt is narrow and communal minded.

- Yes, BD allowed heavy Indian boilers or what to move through BD and over the landfilled bridge built across the Feni river. However, BD is getting 100 MW of power from that Palatana power station.

- By the way, 1500 ton Hilish is actually very small. I hope, the quantity will reach 5,000 tons or more this year on the assumption that the catch will be above 500,000 tons.

- If you go through the newspapers of those days, you will read that India itself had shortage of onion production. How can one complain. BD has a very large farmland comparing to population. It should become self-sufficient in almost all the foods including onions. However, watching the preparation of soil bed for onion I can attest that BD farmers just do not know to prepare a correct bed.

- As far as I understand, Indians are swarming our country but Indian BJP blames BD. Very stupid.

- Talking on Teesta river, BD should negotiate with India to build a large reservoir in the Indian land to contain rain water that can be opened in winter for use in both the countries. Today, it is run of power stations only in the Indian side.

- About floods due to Farakka, our perception is not actually true. When we have floods in BD, India already is flooded. So, in order to save their own necks they open it. Actually, Farakka is not helping Bihar because of siltation. It should be demolished to save both BD and India.

Bangladesh’s exports to India to grow record $2 billion by FY22: FBCCI

Bangladesh’s exports to the Indian markets are expected to reach $2 billion for the first time at the end of the current financial year as the demand for Bangladeshi products is increasing to the neighbouring country.

With the new economic pact due to be signed then BD exports to India could rise to around 10 billion US dollars a year by 2030.
