KALAYA, Oct 20: Elders of seven tribes of Orakzai Agency have joined hands against militants and decided to abolish no go areas for Sunni and Shia communities to create sectarian harmony in their region.
They took the decisions at a jirga held at Ondikhel area of lower Orakzai tehsil on Wednesday and announced raising a joint lashkar to ensure safe travelling for people belonging to any tribe in their respective areas.
The jirga was attended by more than 300 elders of Storikhel, Bezoti, Utmankhel, Ferozkhel, Bar Mohammadkhel, Manikhel, and Sepoya tribes. It was for the first time that elders of Sunni and Shia sects attended a joint jirga for a common cause after eight years.
Prominent among the elders were Malak Qudratullah Shah, Malak Haji Masaid Khan, Malak Syed Zarin, Pir Fazal Abbas, Malak Jamal Hussain and Malak Noorjab Ali. The jirga was also attended by Political Agent Riaz Khan Mehsud and operation in-charge Col Habibullah.
The jirga decided to take joint action against suspected militants, if there was any, in lower Orakazai region. No militant will be allowed to take shelter in the area, the elders said, adding both the sects would take arms in case of attack on any of them. They said brotherly relationship would be developed among all the tribes.
They said that peace committees would be formed in respective areas of all the seven tribes to keep vigil on the activities of militants.
The Sunni elders expressed satisfaction over the restoration of law and order in the agency and pledged to shun all enmities with co-tribesmen from Shia sect. They also appreciated the role of government and fellow tribesmen for giving safe passage to the returning Sunni IDPs via Shia-dominated areas. They invited Shia elders to visit their area.
The Shia elders also expressed the same feelings and resolved to maintain sectarian harmony in the tribal region. They said old enmity should be done away with to put the region on the path of progress and development.
The elders pledged that all out efforts would be made to maintain the environment of peace and tranquility by keeping away the evil forces from their columns. These elements are bent upon to exploit the fragile sectarian situation and promote their covert agenda, they added.
Mr Mesud and Col Habibullah appreciated the role of elders for bringing all tribes and sects on single platform.
They said a complete peace would further augment those efforts as both sides wanted peace in the region. They said the accord would further strengthen the brotherhood and have positive impact on the overall situation. It will be a blow to militants, they added.
