India’s Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) programme, which has had a long gestation period, is likely to have some forward movement soon. According to sources, the Missile Complex located in Hyderabad is working vigorously to conduct a trial for intercepting the ‘enemy or target ballistic missile’ at a distance ‘longer than 100 kilometres’. Sources revealed that the aim is to have the trial before the year end. That would mean that once the system is in place at strategic locations, it can engage the enemy missile inside the enemy territory.

“We know that the talks about installing the BMD system at Delhi and some other cities have been doing the rounds for quite some time. But so far nothing has been finalised on this front. What we are working on is that in order to protect important border establishments, the BMD system can be placed in such a way that it would intercept enemy missile bang inside the enemy country itself. Thus, the target would be engaged far away from the point of deployment of the defence system and the debris would also fall far off, causing little damage to our territory,” an official told TOI.

The BMD system, which is part of the Advanced Air Defence ( AAD) system of India, is being spearheaded by DRDO’s Missile Complex and is a unique two-tiered or a twin-layer system consisting of two interceptor missiles for both high and low altitude interception and handling of target ballistic missiles. Officials disclosed that the tested current range for exo-atmospheric interception is 50 kms (altitude) and that for endo-atmospheric interception is between 15-20 kms.

So far, the tests have been conducted with a mimic enemy missile, which in turn is a modified version of Prithvi. Officials claimed it had the same terminal velocity as a 2,000 km range ballistic missile when the BMD system’s interceptor missile engaged and destroyed it, which indeed is the aim of the first phase of BMD shield. The phase-II involves interception of ballistic missile with 5,000 km range. The first successful test was carried out in November 2006. “If successful, India’s BMD system would be way ahead compared to that of US and China, in terms of simultaneous intercepting and handling of multiple targets by multiple interceptors in a hit-to-destroy mode at such long distances,” said a senior DRDO official.

They are talking about AD-1 and AD-2 I think.

Seems like PDV is going to be tested....Eagerly waiting for this test...

I dont think so

The concerned interceptors are obviously PDV and AAD.

Now see this.

The 50 km missile is PAD and the 15-20 km missile is AAD.
The phase will will only be operational once PDV with the range of 150 km is successfully tested.
It has not happened yet.

The phase 2 consisting of AD1 and AD2 will take atleast till 2015 for its first test

Great news ....

Great news ....

Great new indeed. But this part of news is bragging.

"The first successful test was carried out in November 2006. “If successful, India’s BMD system would be way ahead compared to that of US and China, in terms of simultaneous intercepting and handling of multiple targets by multiple interceptors in a hit-to-destroy mode at such long distances,” said a senior DRDO official.""
