TikTok recent streak of bad news continued on Thursday after elite gamer and YouTuber Tyler "Ninja" Blevins tweeted that he had deleted the China-made app over privacy concerns.

"I have deleted the TikTok app off all my devices. Hopefully a less intrusive company (data farming) that isn’t owned by China can recreate the concept legally, such funny and amazing content on the app from influencers,” Ninja tweeted to his 6 million followers.

The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to TikTok for comment.

The rejection of a highly influential gamer like Ninja is the latest blow to TikTok in what is becoming a summer to forget for the company and stark counterpoint to the rapid growth that saw it hit 1 billion users in just over two years. TikTok is owned by Beijing-based tech giant ByteDance, and the short-video social network has long been dogged by privacy concerns and whether the Chinese government has access to user data. The company has consistently denied any links to Chinese state actors and says user data is safe.

Despite its protestations, TikTok is reeling from a cascade of global events. Last month, India’s government banned TikTok and 58 other Chinese apps citing privacy and national security issues, a move prompted by a deadly Himalayan border clash between the two countries.

The ban in India is a huge setback for TikTok as it had well over 200 million users and was growing rapidly, with the country accounting for 30 percent of all global downloads. Some China-based reports say that ByteDance could lose as much as $6 billion following the India ban.

There have been intermittent calls for the U.S. to follow India and ban TikTok and this movement was given impetus by Sec. of State Mike Pompeo in a Fox News interview this week. In the interview, Pompeo suggested the U.S. government is currently "looking at" a ban on Chinese social media apps with the focus on TikTok. "With respect to Chinese apps on people's cellphones, I can assure you the United States will get this one right too," Pompeo said in an interview on Monday's episode of Fox News' The Ingraham Angle. "I don't want to get out in front of the president, but it's something we're looking at."

Pompeo added that people should only download TikTok "if you want your private information in the hands of the Chinese Communist Party."

Additionally, the Australian government is also mulling over a TikTok ban, the country’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison said this week that it’s "right for people to have an increased awareness of where these platforms originate and the risks they present."

Seeking to staunch accusations of its closeness to the Chinese government, on Monday TikTok pulled out of Hong Kong due to privacy concerns over a new National Security Law passed in the territory. TikTok went further than its tech rivals in rejecting possible requests for user information from Hong Kong police, but the company only had 150,000 users in that market.

TikTok’s woes and uncertain future is providing an opportunity for its rivals. This week Instagram’s TikTok-like short video platform Reels went live in India, Brazil, France and Germany with further expansion imminent.

Its become increasingly evident that TikToks future outside of China is grim.

I ask people, how much privacy Facebook, Twitter, Google etc intrude upon!!
Do you have any ideas!!
They can track you right to your door number, wake up world.
They keep tracks on millions of people, whose data is passed to the Western agencies quietly, without they ever knowing.

.
Chinese apps are dangerous fir normal citizens only if they access our financial details , like bank accounts and passwords. Imagine losing your life savings to a guy sitting in china , with no chance of redress. Atleast you are assured thst a western based government hacker wont target a individual and can be put through a legal process incase it happens. You lose money to a guy in China, you are broke with zero chance of redressal.

.
Well, it seems like Tiktok is secure and safe enough for Emmanuel Macron, the French President, to use.

But I guess this Ninja person is more important and needs more security than Macron. who knows.

This is coming from a guy that got famous off playing Fortnite (40% owned by a Chinese company) and recently started playing Valorant (100% owned by a Chinese company).

He’s a very wealthy guy now, so of course he can afford to be a little picky.

Little does Mr. Ninja know that Fortnite is owned by a Chinese company LOL

All of these companies collect data ... its how apps work.

He's not being picky. He played Fortnite yesterday and Valorant today.

He just got out of his Mixer contract because Microsoft and Facebook are partnering together. He will join either Twitch, Youtube Gaming, or Facebook Gaming. If he is joining Facebook gaming then it might literally be part of his contract to not use Tiktok because Tiktok is a Instagram competitor.

Valorant's anti-cheat system has to be on all the time. You cannot turn it off even when you're not playing. If you turn it off, then you will have to turn it back on and restart your computer before you can even connect to the game again. The idea that he's concerned about his privacy or about intrusive companies from China is laughable considering he was playing Valorant today.

Very interesting info. Thanks!

On a similar note, I used to watch some Dr. disrespect videos and I found him to be quite hilarious.

Not so much anymore though

I was amazed at how much money these guys make in general

He was banned from Twitch last week or two weeks ago lol. You would be surprised how many people don't have a life and are glued to their livestreams 24/7. The female streamers are even worse. There are so many simps after female streamers lol that they can rely on donations to survive.

What do you have to hide?

Nothing.

Don't you get it!! I am here with my full name, picture etc. It means I have nothing to hide.
Don't go with my profile here, I share my twits here, which identifies me clearly with my picture.

How many of you do it!!

Right. So why single out Chinese products/platforms!!

I have spent over 20 years in IT industry, have many qualifications and experience, on the happening side of things, not boring "programming" jobs. Where the security and cyber security are of major concerns.

Therefore, you should know, I am talking from experience.
Before you say anything, no I don't know much about games, that's for my kids to play.

Nobody needs to use Tik Tok..Its not an essential need.
Its a fun app, yes, but Chinese software companies are well known to steal clipboard data under the pretext of many vague excuses. Now even if they try to rectify their wrong doings, the damage has been done and consumers have become more aware about how apps interact with their devices and privacy concerns.

Nothing.

If you really have 20 years of experience in IT I would not expect you to raise this question.
I am not from the IT industry but I am well aware that there is a BIG difference in how US companies try to monitor your data compared to Chinese. The US companies do it transparently and clearly mention this in the terms and conditions. The data is used by marketers to boost conversions from their ads and for better targeting. However, Chinese companies are mainly interested in spying on people for the CCP government - that is the main difference.

Tik Tok until quite recently was monitoring the clipboard of its users, which is completely unacceptable intrusion of privacy.

The difference is Facebook doesn't give/sell your data to authoritarian regime. They're still problematic don't get me wrong.
