What's new

Top 10 Fire Support Vehicles

There are a lot of kind 105mm ammo. Only rooikat and Centairo (Stryker??)can fire Full charge 105mm L7 ammo. Because recoill 13 tons.
AMX-10-RC, Turkish ARMA and much more Tank killer use half charge 105mm light ammo.
Roikat 120mm gun can fire 120/45 ammo. 120/52 has more powerful recoiless.
Thats why Russians havent used big guns on wheeled vehicles. There ii few accuracy and much more blast.
Even on BTRs they dont prefer 30mm autogun .Also low accuracy.

Attention to maneuvre 1:24
It is real tank.

EDIT: (I found info about AMX-10_RC)
The gun on the AMX-10RC is not a "standard 105mm" if your talking L7 class, which is the western standard for 105mm high-velocity AFV guns. The AMX-10's 105mm F2 gun fires lower-powered ammunition than the L7/M68 series and the rounds are in no way interchangable. A mind-life upgrade would have replaced this gun with the L7 compatible G2 but I am not certain if this ever went ahead.

Surprise from Ukraine.
I think it will be the most cost-effective fire support vehicle.

New Wheeled Gvozdika from Ukraine.

what is the difference between tank and fire support vehicle ?
protection.
fire support has the same big gun but not the armor (it has speed/agility however to compensate)
tank has both gun and armor but not the speed/agility

. .
Tanks- direct fire,
Fire support -Pre dominantly Indirect fire but also capable of direct fire.
what is definition of direct fire versus indirect fire ?

protection.

if i put an artillery gun on armoured chasis or heavy duty truck does it become a fire support vehicle ?

. .
Indirect fire support > mortar, howitzer
Direct fire support > high velocity AT cannon (tank destroyer >= 105mm) or medium velocity, lower pressure flat trajectory gun (>= 60mm cannon)

Depends on what is the caliber of of your artillery gun. if you put 80mm mortars, or 105mm howitzers, it could be classified as a fire support vehicle. if you put an 155 mm gun on an armored platform it will be most likely be classified as self propelled howitzer, it would be a modern equivalent of a siege weapon.

Although both classes can be used for arty support or fire support.

That piece of mobile artillery would be a support weapon, but not necessarily a fire support vehicle as we understand it. A more appropriate term would be SP Artillery (as in self propelled).

Google these terms and select images: differences become apparent quickly.

G'day Mate

Tank is build from ground up for Armoured Warfare, it's primary job is to engage enemy armoured and use it speed and agility to punch a whole in enemy defences. Tanks are always used as an offensive weapon, normally, tank would not be used to provide infantry support, think of it like the cavalry used in medieval time, they are to disrupt enemy formation and engage with other horses. You will not see cavalrymen dismount and supporting the infantry during those period, you will not normally see tanks stop and support infantry now.

However, by killing enemy Tanks/Defensive Position along the way, tanks indirectly support infantry unit for their push.

Fire Support Vehicle is, as its name suggested, used for fire support, the fire support is then offered to the infantry and FSV/IFV will travel alongside infantry platoon to support them every inch of the way, sometime FSV can have the ability to carry troop.

The difference is simple, while Tank are build to engage isolate warfare, they are speedy on/off road, they pack a lot of firepower and armour so that they can fight alone, but due to their size and weight, they are not easily deployable. FSV on the other hand, is light weight, having reasonable firepower, can move and deployed alongside infantry platoons/company/battalions, but they lack of self defence ability and cannot fight a stand alone battle.

The original ideas of Tanks and FSVs/IFVs are stemming from male and female tanks during WW1, where one is used to engage and kill other tanks, another is used to accompany the infantry and rush the frontlines.

This is an overgeneralized statement toward both Tanks and FSVs.

In fact, both Tanks and FSVs can do both direct and indirect fire support. Most HE round used for soft and hard defence are fire indirectly from tanks, namely when tanks have to engage with Defilade Defensive Position (DDP) by either enemy guns/armour/bunker.

As said above, tanks is a sort of armoured vehicle military used to do a stand alone fighting, while FSV/IFV were designed to fight alongside with infantry support.

If you could recognise , In this topic all vehicles were wheeled.
Nowadays wheeled fire support vehicles are more popular.

Tanks and tracked vehicles destroy roads, highway and autobahn.
Have you ever driven on the highway that had just passed tanks?:)
And wheeled systems are cost effective, fast, smarter, lighter and have fuel effiency.
