Tk 2.28b project to clean four rivers under way
Tk 2.28b project to clean four rivers under way
The government has taken a mega plan of Tk 2.28 billion to make the four rivers including Buriganga around Dhaka city free from pollution.
A source in the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) said in the city Thursday that three other rivers to be made pollution free are Turag, Shitalakkhya and Balu, reports BSS.
The source said an estimated 300,000 cubic metres of rubbish containing polythene, coconut shells, plastic, mud and bricks accumulated on the river beds required to be removed. The layer of rubbish is about three-metre deep.
About the plan Raquibul Islam Talukder, superintending engineer of the BIWTA told the news agency that the river cleaning project to be funded by the government is now with the ECNEC for approval.
The mega project has been taken in light of an earlier Buriganga-Turag cleaning project which ended in June 2011, said the official adding the one and a half years project worth Tk 210 million started in January 2010 for cleaning three kilometres of Buriganga from Badamtoli to Kamrangirchar and one kilometre of the Turag in Tongi. Flushing of water to eliminate water pollution, removal of polythene/ rubbish that accumulated on the riverbeds, binding of the riverbanks, construction of demarcation pillars, excavation of rivers, increasing the flow of the rivers and developing a circular water way around the city are the components of the plan.
Besides, walkways on both the banks of the Buriganga would be constructed and the water of Jamuna would be flushed into the Buriganga permanently under the project, said the BIWTA official.
The Buriganga river, which passes by the capital, became biologically and hydrologically dead due to indiscriminate dumping of domestic and industrial wastes, encroachment of the bank and the river itself by unscrupulous people.
Laboratory analysis of the water samples shows that presence of dissolved oxygen (DO) in Buriganga water ranges from 0.50 to 0.84 mgs per litre (mg/L), while that in standard surface water is 5.0 mg/L in Bangladesh.
For implementation of the project, the official said, the government will purchase two waste cleaning machines from the USA at a cost of Tk 750 million which would help to purify the water by increasing supply of oxygen and bacteria.
State Minister for Environment and Forests Dr M Hasan Mahmud said that due to government initiatives, the amount of dissolved oxygen in Buriganga water is increasing.
The critical condition of the Buriganga has improved, said the state minister adding the government has taken initiative to relocate Hazaribagh tanneries to Savar with the facilities of effluent treatment plant (ETP) within a couple of years.
