Pakistan Cricket Board announces central contracts for players
The Pakistan Cricket Board has given central contracts to 19 players for a period of six months. Out of these 19 cricketers, seven are placed in Category A, five in Category B and the remaining seven in Category C.
Kamran Akmal has been able to find a slot in Category A, even though his performance recently has been below satisfactory. The wicket-keeper batsman has been struggling for form with the bat and the gloves. He was vastly criticized by the media and fans in the recent ICC World Cup 2011 match against New Zealand, as he dropped Ross Taylor twice in one over.
Kamran’s younger brothers Umar Akmal and Adnan Akmal have also been successful in receiving central contracts. Umar is placed in Category B, as Adnan is in Category C. Adnan’s inclusion in the central contracts came as a surprise to many critics.
Veteran batsman Younis Khan, who was ignored last year, has made a come-back to the top category. Shoaib Akhtar’s story is similar to that of Younis, as he was also not in the central contacts in 2010, but ever since his return he has been a permanent member of the team and has paved his way to the top category.
Misbah-ul-Haq has been a consistent performer for the Men in Green in last couple of months, which has led him to move up in the queue. He is now also in the top division. Pakistan’s skipper Shahid Afridi, fast bowler Umar Gul and all-rounder Abdul Razzaq have retained their slots in Category A.
Opening batsman Muhammad Hafeez, who is also known as ‘The Professor’, is in Category B. Spinners Abdur Rehman and Saeed Ajmal are also in this division, as fast bowler Wahab Riaz is the fifth player in this list.
Test specialist Taufiq Umar made his return to Pakistan cricket team after a couple of years and is positioned in Category C. While 19-year-old Ahmed Shehzad, who opens for Pakistan in One Day International's, is also in the same league with Asad Shafiq. Asad’s performance in Test matches has helped him in claiming a central contract.
Other players in Category C are Azhar Ali, Tanvir Ahmed and Junaid Khan. Junaid has come out on some fine performances in first-class cricket to win a central contract.
Certain players name has been omitted from the contracts. The biggest name missing was that of Muhammad Yousuf. The batsman has been the mainstay in Pakistan’s batting line-up for the last decade and he will be hugely disappointed to miss out on this opportunity.
Shoaib Malik is another cricketer who is ignored by PCB, as he was also over-looked for the ongoing World Cup. Apart from Malik and Yousuf, other players who have failed to make it into the central contracts are Danish Kaneria, Fawad Alam, Sohail Tanveer and Imran Farhat.
The following is a break-down of the contract categories and subsequent players:
Category A: Younis Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq, Shahid Afridi, Abdul Razzaq, Kamran Akmal, Umar Gul, Shoaib Akhtar
Category B: Mohammad Hafeez, Umar Akmal, Abdul Rehman, Saeed Ajmal, Wahab Riaz
Category C: Taufiq Umar, Asad Shafiq, Ahmed Shehzad, Azhar Ali, Adnan Akmal, Tanvir Ahmed, Junaid Khan
