Thousand-year old Buddhist city discovered in Munshiganj’s Nateshwar

An estimated thousand-year-old Buddhist city has been discovered seven metres beneath the ground at Nateshwar in Munshiganj.






The Director of Archaeological Excavation and Research Project in Munshiganj’s Bikrampur, Nuh-ul-Alam Lenin, announced the discovery at a press conference at the site on Monday.

The excavation at the site in Tongibarhi Upazila was conducted for two months under a joint initiative of Bangladesh and China.

Research Director Prof Shah Sufi Mustafizur Rahman said they found two roads made of old bricks in ‘attractive architectural design’, a zigzag 2.75-metre wide wall and many other archaeological relics at the site.

Mustafizur Rahman, who also teaches archaeology at Jahangirnagar University, said the discovery of the relics was the evidence of the existence of a ‘rich civilisation’ in Bikrampur in the past.

Twenty Bangladeshi and four Chinese experts took part in the excavation.

Officials at the project said the excavation at the site would remain suspended from late this month to November.

Prime Minister’s Adviser Gowher Rizvi, Chinese Ambassador in Dhaka Ma Mingqiang, Professor at China’s Hunan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology Chai Huangbo, Munshiganj district Deputy Commissioner Md Saiful Hasan Badal and district Superintendent of Police Biplab Bijoy Talukder were present at the press conference.

Before the press meet, the guests and experts visited the site.

You hit the nail on the head with this one Gibbs! Many of our Muslims brothers are ashamed of their bhuddist pass, but I have absolutely no idea why, maybe their scared of the younger generations know about our history, then they might seek more information. And well what do you know, next, we become bhuddist again, but I tell you that won't happen, hah, but there scared. I think Bangladesh needs comprehensive religious studies! But that will never hapoen

Because Arabs and other initial Muslim conquerers had love for their own past. But they destroyed everything in their path example for south asian structures. Indigenous Muslims again grew love for everything in this region. But AQ is another thing.

Even Pakistani's.. Atleast the vast majority of them are very proud of their Gandhara national treasures.. Unique to Pakistan Gandhara Buddhist art are held in high esteem by most educated Pakistani people

To be fair Bangladeshi people are not represented by these radical few.. There are a significant minority of Buddhist Bangladeshi's in the country living in reletive peace and harmony

Islam is not against cultural practices that r compatible with islam, the ONLY true religion. For eg. the pre-islamic pagan arabs had great hospitality and Islam is not against that. Anything going against Islam is NOT acceptable., What can buddism contribute to BD's culture? Anything good i.e compatible with Islam is not limited to buddism but present in many other religons and culture and islam is not against that. Or do u expect muslims to celebrate pagan festivities and worship statues?

Btw there is NO concept of nation state in islam. Nationalism is a modern European concept that replaced tribalism and europe has long given up on it in favour of secular brotherhood like EU. Racist concept of tribalism and nationalism is something islam came to abolish. And nationalism is more ludicrous than tribalism. Is there any set of unique values that is shared by all segments of a "nation" ? Is your morality defined by few lines on the map? Well, it's high time we should start investing in the archaeological excavations. The Wari-Bateshwar ruins is perhaps the most promising site which could unearth as far as 5,000 years old of ancient history of Bangladesh.
