There is lots of messages in internet how smart and tough is Putin and how weak and stupid is Obama. Even in US many think in same way. There are many cartoons showing it:

Lets check the reality.

1) When the Arab Spring started there were demonstrations both in Egypt (US ally) and Syria (Russia ally).
2) Security shot hundreds of protesters both in Egypt and Syria, but it did not help, protest only escalated.

What happened next In Egypt:

- Obama told Mubarak to step down.
- Muslim Brotherhood came to power in first free elections.
- After a year MB was disposed and military came back to power.
Result: Everything is same as before, country is fine.

What happened next in Syria:

- Putin told Assad not give up. Say that everyone who oppose u is "rat", "foreign terrorist", "Alqaeda". Shoot, slaughter, bomb, gas them without mercy.
Result: Syria (Russia's only ally in ME) is totally destroyed. 250,000 killed, 12 million (half of the population) displaced. Assad lost all the resources and barely controls 25% of the territory. Russia spends billions of dollars each year just to keep Assad afloat.

for Egypt, this is not that simple. USA wanted to believe MB was a good solution for Egypt and other countries
and then support them. But in fact clearly they let the new power in Egypt act against MBs since they are not stupid and could see MB tried to change Egypt constitution and take by force Egypt down to islamism.

USA will always support Egypt i guess for so many reasons: fighting the Hamas terrorists, improving peace / diplomatic solutions with Israel (that means of course they need allies around that are against MBs)
USA is supporting Turkey but not especially Erdogan. I am sure that they would prefer Turkey without Erdogan, which for us, liberals and socialist liberals, we believed it was the best country in ME before Erdogan.

unfortunately this is true , the USA is ruled by institutions that carve plans for any president to undertake while Russia is ruled by a salvic Rambo . This would explain the difference in strategies undertaken by each country . The USA simply does not have many interests in the Middle East like before and is gradually moving its attention to the far east where the world's economic and security future lies .

The middle east is simply falling apart and dying , the only thing we could think of is how to get out of this bloody quagmire .

GWB left the US broke to the tune of 14 Trillion dollars...They are dead broke, in the other hand Russia has an estimated reserve of over $700 B.just in cash...Putin is hardly broke.

I don't understand this, the Russians helped Egypt in the Israel VS Egypt war, many Israeli pilots were shot down thanks to Russian help.

Why would anyone think US is supporting Egypt?

I think truth is very different, I think US is just making sure Egypt is poor and corrupted without any real power and economic growth. I doubt Israel and the US forgot how Egypt was allied with Russia in the past.

That would explain why every damn thing in Egypt is imported from Turkey etc, they can't even produce simple food items with a 80 million population.

Similar to Iran it will remain a shit hole until it becomes Israel friendly, but Iran is going the wrong direction they just let Russian missiles fly over their territory.

As for Turkey no idea what's going on, talked to an older Turkish christian orthodox man yesterday and he told me Erdogan was actually jewish. We got US bases and US nukes and radar and all that + NATO but there is something about Turkey that just doesn't make sense.

The Israel VS Turkey bullying incident was a hoax, the trade actually improved a lot during the boat incident. A lot of smoke and mirrors going on in the ME.

Thats only on surface. You should not confuse what politicians say with what they mean. Egypt still receives aid from US + aid from KSA which is another US ally. So its fully in US sphere.

While the only ally of Russia in ME is totally destroyed Syria, thanks to "wise" policies of Putin.

Egypt is lucky that they ere not allies of Russia, otherwise they were now barrel bombing Cairo neighborhoods in support of Mubarak.
