International Women's Day 2015
MUMBAI | NEW DELHI: This International Women's Day, employees across industries will look up to 'specialists' who can teach them a thing or two about diversity, leadership and ways to succeed in a male-dominated workplace.
The corporate world is bringing in achievers from diverse fields to understand how to walk the exclusivity talk.
Ericsson's employees will interact with Anuradha Prakasha — operations director at ISRO and one of the youngest in team to have launched GSAT-12. They will also interact with filmmaker Gauri Shinde and Captain Indraani Singh. Singh is the first Asian woman to fly a commercial Airbus 320 and the world's first woman to command an A-300 full bodied jet.
The talks will revolve around diversity and leadership. Called 'Overcoming Barriers', the panel discussion will highlight how one overcomes physical disability and gender stereotyping to achieve their goals.
"Role models from outside our field broaden our frame of reference and help us by not being insular in our thinking," says Padmaja Alaganandan, leader of PwC's people and change practice. Reports suggest that around 18% of India's organized workforce comprises women.
Google this year will have standup comedian and AIB roast participant, Aditi Mittal, talk about her journey in a largely male dominated business.
On similar lines, Coca Cola's list of women achievers include a navy commodore, an animator and a samurai. The company head is yet to take a final call on who amongst the three will interact with their employees and did not divulge any more details. "They break the traditional gender notions and provide practical tips on how to manage workplace realities," says a company official who does not wish to be named.
Last year, to mark International Women's Day, the beverage maker had invited MC Mary Kom and air marshal Bandhopadhaya — the first woman air marshal of the Indian Air Force.
Competitor PepsiCo India plans to bring in one woman achiever a day this week. Some of the names include Kirthiga Reddy, MD of Facebook India, who will talk on social media influences on FMCGs. Renuka Ramnath, founder of Multiples Equity, will share her thoughts on skill sets a leader needs and role of mentors in an individual's growth, while Vanitha Narayanan, MD of IBM, will discuss transformation management and its evolution over time.
India Inc hopes these achievers will become role models for many women workers as the corporate world tries to promote more women to top positions.
At least 80% of Indians say their company is preparing more women for senior management roles this year as compared to last year, according to an Accenture study on inclusion and diversity.
"When these achievers talk, one realises that challenges faced by women across cultures and countries are similar and this helps many to believe they too can reach similar positions despite gender struggles," says Nirmala Menon, founder of Interweave Consultancy, which works on work-life issues. Menon, along with the top brass of Vodafone, will address employees on this issue.
And then, there are firms that have decided to form an alliance and work towards more equality.
This March, for the first time, business leaders from Godrej, Mondelez, Hindustan Unilever, Cummins and Tata Group will share best practices on diversity and inclusion.
