This PIA Pilot Is Winning Millions of Hearts after Saving a Flight from a Major Tragedy

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is our national carrier that was once reputable for having one of the best pilots on earth. In fact, about a decade or two ago, the emerging international airlines sought training of their pilots and crew from some of the best local pilots and their staff. Now, PIA is laden with corruption and is truly a shadow of its former self, yet efforts are brought together to revive the name that once Pakistanis proudly boast of.

A story is going popular among people on social media. It’s about a PIA pilot who managed to avoid a major tragedy from occurring during a flight from Karachi. The aircraft was an ATR and there was turbulence during the flight because of a thunderstorm encountered at Sukkur region. A passenger shared the entire incident of pilot’s heroism and God’s mercy.

HERE IS HOW THE PILOT MANAGED TO SAVE THE FLIGHT FROM A DISASTER
The following is a Facebook post written by one of the passengers onboard flight PK-536:

Thanks to Allah Almighty, the Greatest Creator, who saved our lives on Monday Flight PK 536 from a thunderstorm at Sukkur region.

After that, hats off to our hero Pilot and his team of PIA. Pilot Amjed Mehboob, Osman Hashim Baloch took a flight out of a thunderstorm and flew back to Karachi safely.

i am traveling for the last 15 years and whatever you say about PIA, that day we experienced the best professional team in this industry. May Allah bless them.

This is the greatest example of professional skills. PIA pilots are known to be one of the best pilots and it got proved, seriously. No matter if the national carrier is entangled in credit crunch and corruption, this incident surely stands-out in all positivity. The passengers thanked him and you could see what a humble man he is!

Pakistani pilots for both military and commercial jets are truly professional. They have skills on par the best in the trade but unfortunately PIA is being methodically destroyed by the corruptocracy lead by SKA to let his Airblue take over the business.

The problem is with people as well, they will stand patiently in Que at any foreign airport for check in, immigration or security check but as soon as they enter a PIA plane, they turn the place into a Fish market.
I have flown with many airlines but found PIA provides the best cuisine.

So how did the plane manage to fly into a thunderstorm in the first place? The pilot's great and commendable skill came later.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi is not the one to blame for the downfall of PIA. It was the PPP which took every opportunity to load up its supporters as extra employees into the airline and then it used the unions to force through their demands. Now all sorts of criminal activities, from drug trafficking to human smuggling, happen with impunity. In fact, the corruption was so brazen that when the illegal employees removed by PMLN in its second tenure were restored, the arrears were all pocketed by the PPP leadership. That scam ran into billions of rupees. At one time, there were 17 HR officers stationed at Multan airport, even though there is no HR office in Multan. It was because the PPP PM was from Multan.

Now if the PMLN moves against these criminal employees, they either use unions to get protection, or else get a stay from the supreme court.

All of this is first-hand information. The PMLN has been the most honest of all the political forces, including those now campaigning under the flag of PTI.

So how did the plane manage to fly into a thunderstorm in the first place? The pilot's great and commendable skill came later.

As the ATR levelled off at 7,000 feet, embedded Cbs (pronounced See Bees) or cumulonimbus clouds were becoming active.

The name cumulonimbus is derived from Latin, cumulus which means heap and nimbus which translates to 'stormcloud' is a dense towering vertical cloud which is carried by powerful upward air currents and can cause turbulence, lightning, large hail, significant downdrafts as well as very strong updrafts.

What is worse for pilots, is that the cumulonimbus clouds are not visible on the radar like other weather anomalies.

As soon as the plane levelled off, Captain Mehboob noticed red on the radar, and immediately reacted, asking his co-pilot:

"What's that? Why didn't we see it earlier?"

The turboprop was suddenly being hammered by rain and icing and wind shear, causing an uncommanded change in speed, making the ATR jump between 220 and 160 nautical miles. For the layman, that's the kind of turbulence you probably have never even imagined.

Realizing there was something very severe ahead of his plane, which the ATR had as yet not even entered, Captain Mehboob told FO Baloch to turn the bird 30 degrees right. The turbulence continued, so they turned another 30 degrees right.

"I asked Sukkur to allow us to descend further to 3,000 feet."

Having dropped from 15,000 to 3,000 feet, PK536 was no longer even pointing towards its destination. Captain Mehboob turned the plane back towards Sukkur in an attempt to make a direct approach to his destination.

"As soon as we turned towards Sukkur, I could see three streaks of red on the weather radar and I decided that we are not going to go in again."

Captain Mehboob contacted Sukkur ATC, the condition there had worsened. Wind speed which was at a calm 7 knots had gone up to 35 knots. Even before the conversation ended, Sukkur ATC informed PK536 they were experiencing a thunderstorm.

There's a saying among pilots. There are old pilots, and there are bold pilots, but there are no old bold pilots. Landing or even making an attempt to land during a thunderstorm would be futile.

At that moment Captain Mehboob decided to turn around. He abandoned airway Juliet 119. "I took Juliet 112 and we took the route to [waypoint] Zohar and climbed to 12,000 feet, luckily we found clear skies.

The ordeal was over. PK536 was out of danger and was heading back to Karachi.

It missed a turning and ended up in the wrong cloud formation or maybe there is something called air turbulence or weather moving in.

The Government needs to focus on upgrading jets, outlook, interior, new seats, television system, audio system, WiFi system etc.

PIA did start a new Premier service on some international routes.
