‘They don’t have power to negotiate!’ Trump cancels talks with Taliban after attack kills US soldier

(CNN)President Donald Trump said Saturday that Taliban leaders were to travel to the US for secret peace talks this weekend along with the President of Afghanistan at Camp David, but that the meeting has been canceled and he's called off peace talks with the militant group entirely.

Trump tweeted that he scrapped the meeting after the Taliban took credit for an attack in Kabul, Afghanistan, that killed a dozen people, including an American soldier.

US service member killed in Kabul suicide car bomb attack

Inviting Taliban leaders onto American soil is an unprecedented move and a significant development in America's longest running war just days from the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. It comes after Trump said as recently as late last month that he is planning to withdraw thousands of US forces from Afghanistan but will keep 8,600 troops in the country at least for the time being. It's not clear if Trump's Saturday night announcement will impact that plan.
"Unbeknownst to almost everyone, the major Taliban leaders and, separately, the President of Afghanistan, were going to secretly meet with me at Camp David on Sunday," Trump tweeted Saturday night.
Trump claimed that before traveling to the US on Saturday evening, "Unfortunately, in order to build false leverage, they admitted to......an attack in Kabul that killed one of our great great soldiers, and 11 other people."
"I immediately cancelled the meeting and called off peace negotiations," Trump added.
The President slammed the leaders for thinking that the attacks would improve their negotiating position.
"What kind of people would kill so many in order to seemingly strengthen their bargaining position?" he tweeted. "They didn't, they ... only made it worse!"
The State Department referred CNN to the White House for comment.
The insurgent group has not halted its campaign of violence as the peace talks with the US have taken place but Thursday's killing of an American when a deal was reportedly close appears to have prompted the dramatic move from the President.
The Pentagon announced Friday that Sgt. 1st Class Elis Angel Barreto Ortiz was killed in Afghanistan. Barreto, a 34-year-old paratrooper from Morovis, Puerto Rico, died when a car bomb exploded at a checkpoint near NATO headquarters and the US embassy in Kabul. Barreto is the 16th US service member to be killed in Afghanistan in 2019, and three other American service members have been killed in recent weeks.
The Afghan government did not push for the cancellation of the meeting at Camp David after the Taliban attack this week, it was a decision by the White House and the State Department, according to a source familiar with the planning.
Despite Trump saying in his tweet Saturday that peace negotiations are called off, new dates are being discussed by the White House for a potential meeting with the Taliban and the Afghan government, the source says. It's unclear if the Taliban will have to make hard and fast commitments before the meeting or if Trump is using the cancellation and rescheduling simply as a negotiating tactic.
The US troop withdrawals could mark the beginning of the conflict triggered by 9/11 that has cost billions in taxpayer dollars and claimed more than 2,300 American lives.
In his tweets, Trump cast doubt on the leaders' bargaining abilities in light of the killings.
"If they cannot agree to a ceasefire during these very important peace talks, and would even kill 12 innocent people, then they probably don't have the power to negotiate a meaningful agreement anyway," he added. "How many more decades are they willing to fight?"
Secret meeting in the works
Earlier this week CNN was told by a source informed on the matter that the State Department and the National Security Council were working on scheduling a US-Afghan government meeting as well as a US-Taliban meeting on US soil, though the location was never explicitly stated. Afghanistan wanted it sooner rather than later, but the US side was looking at the middle of this month as the most likely date.
Trump was involved in the planning personally, hoping that it would come to fruition in the coming week, the source said. He got personally attached to the outcome and the logistics of the talks after meeting with top advisers about the Afghan peace process in August. Before that, US Special Envoy for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad had been given a long leash to do the negotiating to bring all parties -- including the Taliban -- to an agreement.
The Afghan government had for months been frustrated that they had not been invited to Washington by Trump during his first two and a half years in office. Afghan officials had planned to come last year right after UN General Assembly meeting but the trip fell apart because the timing did not work out, and the Trump administration canceled the visit.
Trump's announcement Saturday comes as the US and the Taliban appeared to be close to finalizing a peace deal. The lead US negotiator Zalmay Khalilzad returned to Doha, Qatar, this week to resume talks with the Taliban.
Khalilzad had told Afghanistan's TOLOnews on Monday that the US and the Taliban have reached an agreement "in principle," pending final approval by Trump.
Khalilzad said that based on the draft agreement, the US would pull troops from five bases across Afghanistan within 135 days so long as the Taliban met conditions set out in the agreement. The US currently has about 14,000 service members in Afghanistan, alongside NATO troops, helping to train and advise Afghan troops and conducting counterterrorism operations.
This story has been updated with additional developments Saturday.

Lol so there goes peace talks. As feared Taliban are inherently stupid to seize any opportunity. They still bomb Kabul in the middle of peace talks.

Either so called Taliban leaders have no control over their foot soldiers who can change sides anyway. Or they are just stupid as f and want to be in state of war. If its former then its even worse, it mean this farce of peace deal will not go anywhere. Remind me of our own peace deals with TTP.

If the USA wants a way out she has to directly talk to Pak and negotiate the terms in a comprehensive manner!! Everything else is a waste of time.....

If some believe conspiracies from across the border then it would make it sound like that Pakistan is behind failed peace talks to put more pressure on US to act on IoK.

.
The only reason USA came to negotiations was due to sustained Taliban attacks which USA could not stop with multiple military operations
There is no peace deal yet nor a formal ceasefire
Trump is just face.saving in front of Hawks for the time being

USA wanna get out of afg because of these very attacks other wise USA would be happy not to

For a change, dices are falling with the right numbers and into the right squares to aid Pak, and that too almost spontaneously without much effort from Pak.....

.
I have a feeling that if the USA will not use its weight in Kashmir, it will face an increasingly difficult situation in Afghanistan. Peace is in Afghanistan is in Pakistan's interest and it will pursue it with or without the USA... and you know what I mean.

A relevant story of a guy who was looking to sell his restaurant

True story, told to me by the person involved in it.

There was a restaurant in Melbourne owned by an Indian who was running it at a loss. The restaurant had been successful but over time it lost customers and restaurant first came to break-even and then started losing money every month. The owner was looking for someone to take over for some $200K Australian Dollars. One Australian fellow came to know about it and offered him $140K. It was significantly less than the price Indian was expecting and refused the offer. After waiting a month and finding no other offer, the guy came back to cut a deal at $160~170K but this time the Australian buyer offered $120K instead. The owner got frustrated and complained that were you not offering $140K before so why are you sliding down on your offer and in anger left the negotiation. The restaurant was still losing and waiting was coming at a cost of ongoing salaries, rent, and meal/maintenance expenses. If he had shut it down, the closed restaurant would've sold at an even low price; the price of old furniture, cutlery and old kitchen appliances only.

Another 15 days later, the Indian called this OZ and expressed his desire to meet on the condition that last offered $120K is still on the offer, but the Australian guy said what $120? It is 80K if you take the price today. Indian fellow abused him over the phone and hang up, only 3 hours later visiting him in person with an apology and agreeing to sell at $80K.

Now, this American anger is reminding me of the above story. There is nothing that Americans will gain by waiting. Will they inject more mone? more soldiers? more military hardware to repeat what they've been doing and failing in 19 years? It's a stupid move by Americans to call off the dialogue. They don't have a spectrum of choices to choose from. They will eventually come back to the negotiation table and will have to accept tougher conditions from the Taliban. This American restaurant will be sold for less than $80K in the future.

Taliban will not stop attacking till the very moment peace accord is signed and if what the orange buffoon actually said is true, it just proves them right. US can try to stay another decade in Afghanistan and the result would still be the same. No body commenting here knows what exactly was going in the talks, US kept on shifting the goal posts, started with complete withdrawl to only removing 5000 troops. It was clear Washington was not clear headed in its approach, as there are just too many power centres in the US under Orange idiot. Taliban kept on showing their power, and if the US pulls out of talks completely, good luck with the upcoming elections. I have no faith in what Trump has to say about pretty much anything.

As for Pakistan, its of utmost importance we completely seal the Afghan border and strictly control movements across the border, let afghans sort out their own mess.

US will not Pullout without a deal... Trump suspending the The Talks is temporary just to put a little pressure on Talibans but it wont work on Talibs but at least talibans will make it a bit easier for US when they sit again.... Trump Loves to Appear a Strong man even if the ground reality is opposite, Soon you'll be surprised to see Trump meeting with Talibs just like he met with KimJonUng on North.K & S.Korean Border...

Some sort of Agreement will happen before elections in the US.. Trump wants to push the dates a bit further so he could make some announcements just before the Elections, it will translate into votes for him...

After intervening in Uyghur and now in Hong Kong, American would have been lucky to get away with minimal loss but apparently some idiots or vested interests (deep state) did not want this deal because it hurts their interests.

There was no ceasefire agreement in first place.

Secondly, Taliban will be fine with active conflict as they have been fighting for long and made the opponents to peace talks.

Thirdly, Taliban already denied US condition of minimum 5000 or 8000 troops to remain in Afghanistan. That was the point where talks ended.

Fourthly, US used to target Taliban leadership while they were going back or coming to kind of talks - extract them in open in the name of talks tactics.

Fifthly, if US fails to secure these talks, there are more interested regional powers that will dry out US in Afghanistan and that's shouldn't be a surprise.

Sixth, the deep state as well as war industrialists wouldn't let it happen like this to lose profit.

Seventh, Black Water is already interested for take over and opium producing land can't be lost without earning.

Eight, Iran or who can ignore Pakistan, can be next target and NATO needs places.

Ninth, it wasn't ever meant to be peace negotiation since start.

Tenth, wait for somedays, things will get back on track.

By the way, none will break it for one soldier.

You just summarised the situation in Afghanistan brilliantly there is not much to add to it. If Americans were hoping to drive a wedge among Taliban fractions, it seems that one fell flat on its face. The changing goal posts by Americans made it clear to Taliban that US lacks a coherent strategy when it comes to withdrawal, so they have all the time in the world but how long American can sustain this war? Still we must also keep in mind the outcome of US presidential elections next year.

Wrong, I'm just calling spade a spade.
True that.

Pompeo is a politician - first and foremost
Another Indian trying to portray as an American with little to no understanding of what Pompeo is or his politics are. Keep on harping.
