The Word "Hindu" Is Not Indian, Claims Kamal Haasan

hindu is not mentioned in the Tamil religious works
agree with you here.

it is not mentioned in any of the scriptures but it is now the accepted term when refering to Dharmi people.

Hindu is a geographic term, all people from India = Hindu.

Who cares for names names are given just
to identify someone or something

People post the most ridiculous and insulting rubbish on this forum. Some of the Pakistani members with their posts here do a good job of making their nation look like a tribal backward India fearing nation which is bigoted against anything which they cannot identify with.

"One who reveres Omkara ,worships cow and keeps away from Himsa is called a Hindu"- Swami Vidyaranya, founding Guru of Vijayanagara empire

Swami Vidyaranya

Sri Vidyaranya was the 12th Jagadguru of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham (1380 to 1386 A.D). He brought fame and glory to the Mutt by his dynamic leadership and unique contributions to spiritual and Vedantic thought.

Sri Vidyaranya was a great force in the regeneration of spiritual, moral and cultural values. He built temples at Sringeri and Hampi and established Mutts to propagate Vedanta. He was not only a sage and empire builder, but also a savant and a scholar par excellence. His works constituted the greatest treatises in post-Shankara Advaitic literature. His marvellous interpretative skills reconciled many apparent differences in philosophic texts.

No other thinker or writer has acquired a reputation close to that of Adi Shankara in spreading the truths of Advaita. Special importance has been given to two of Vidyaranya’s popular works on Vedanta – Panchadasi and Jivanmukti Viveka. As invaluable treatises to the sadhaka (spiritual aspirant) and sanyasi, they are famous for their clarity of thought and abundance of quotations from well-known texts.

Hindu is a corruption of word Sindhu or indus. We used to inhabit there and part of ivc. Later the muslims came from outside and drove the IVC inhabitants to current day india.

Do you think that all, or even most of the, people, whether now or in past, who call themselves Hindus, qualify the quoted definition. I don't think so. I have had the occasion of having friendship with some of the Hindus, about 35 years back, who had a large variations in their beliefs. Three of them were regular beef eaters. Similarly, in a book entitled "Dabastan e Mazahib", which was written by a Parsi, in about 1645 AD and documents, in an impartial manner, different religions of India, a variety of different beliefs, often very contradictory, are ascribed to Hinduism.

Yes indeed. Its the mistake of outsiders to classify hinduism as such.

I am sorry. You are mistaken. No body was displaced. People changed their religion, from Hinduism to Islam. Forced displacement of Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims, which took place during 1947, is an altogether different thing.

I am saying all Pakistanis except those who migrated to Pakistan in 1947 are native to the where they are residing and here no one identifies himself as Turk Arab or anything

valid point, these variation in beliefs must have confused the Islamic and British rulers, hence they conveniently lumped them all as Hindus.

(my opinion) Vidyaranya was an advaitin vedantist, so his definition should be restricted to the followers of the othodox smartha tradition, not the others who dont observe the himsa rule. BTW, Vidyaranya's contradicts advaitin expounder Adi Sankara's, classification of the sub continent religion into 6 sects, known as Shanmata. Most likely this could have paved the way for re-branding shanmata as Hinduism

The other 2 vedandist schools (of Ramanuja and Madhva) identify themselves as vaisnavites , similarly the Siva followers in Tamilnadu identify themselves as saivites ( point raised by Kamal Haasan) .

Lingayat is an independent religion: Seer

Its mostly in the north that this Hindu confusion is prevalent, one reason could be their long rule under Muslims who must have referred them as Hindus and their Hindutva (Hinduness) revivalism - promoted by the north based RSS in the 1920s

Tamils never really accepted themselves as Hindus, it was forcefully tagged upon them by the British and later by Indian rulers. This help promote their Hindu Rashtra agenda

One remark of Professor Sundaram Pillai — that, as a Dravidian, he considered himself entirely outside the Hindu polity — put him somewhat out of court with the Swami, who, later on, remarked of him that eminent as he was as a scholar, he had thoughtlessly given himself away to the sway of race prejudice, which already during his travels the Swami had noted as an unpleasant characteristic of certain South Indian minds of the unbalanced or mediocre type.

No. You are greatly mistaken. I fail to understand, from which historical source, you have gathered this strange narrative, which you are propounding. I can say the following with confidence:

1) During the Muslim rule, starting from about 1000 AD, no forced displacement of people, from the areas lying in Pakistan, is recorded in history. Yes, people have changed their religion, from Hinduism to Islam, for a variety of possible reasons.
2) At least 85% of the people, currently living in Pakistan, have descended from Hindu ancestors, who were inhabitants of this Indian subcontinent.
3) As for Pakistanis, identifying themselves with Arabs, Turks, Afghans, Persians or Mughals, that is an altogether different thing, which has nothing to do with the genealogical relations. Such associations have other roots, such as religious, cultural and psychological.
