The Weaknesses of Vietnam Military

Welcome any comments with evidences or comparisons to point out the weaknesses of Vietnam military.
Have in mind that Vietnam almost play defensive role and aim to protect their land, sea, air only.

So don't blame that Vietnam doesn't have aircraft carrier, ... LOL

Compared to the size of your economy, your military is not weak.

Your country is small and in the initial phase of development.

It will take a while and it has to get nasty before it goes nice.

Vietnam depends more on manpower than automatic weapon systems ?

You cannot call it obsolete so long as the system of governance remains the same.

It is more advisable to carry out reforms than entirely overthrowing the system. Besides, once change it, what will replace it? Which doctrine? Or, whose doctrine?

Maybe the initial step is to have less political stress on the mission of army and slowly build it into a technical/professional force as an institution of homeland defence.

The more professional, the better. But this has to go hand in hand with economic development. Concepts and doctrines are important. In a sense, military cannot be separated from politics as it is, in the end of the day, an arm of the state apparatus.

Concepts and doctrines can be updated along with economic development. A poor country's army cannot afford a flawless doctrine.

Vietnam is better stay focused on economic development and seek a several decades of tranquility and favorable regional conditions to prosper.

Overall prosperity will take away the incentives for corruption and inefficiency/laziness. Otherwise, it is just human nature to seek economic benefits.

It is not that developed country armies have no corruption. But they have a greater prosperity than crimes/corruption, hence, petty criminals will have minor effect on the system.

For Vietnam, the most dangerous thing is your army of business. The military for a country is always the tool to ensure the implementation of special politic intentions or purposes of the government. If the military had its own independent economy strength like current Vietnam or North Korea, it would create its own interest groups that only serve and maintain its private interests rather than the public interests, morever it would create its own independent politic will and do great harm to your country. Compared to that, the seriousness of the corruption and selling ranking is quite worthless.

Regarding professionalisation of the armed forces, they are the reflection of the society.

IF the society is developed they will develop at the same pace.

Corruption is a cancer. Sadly, it too is the reflection of the society.

With greater industrialsiation your armed forces will have greater access to equipment and materials.

The fundamental question is: what is the mission of your armed forces?

1. The biggest : 6 submarines signed in 2009, total amount nearly 3 billion: nearly done with 5 received and 1 in coming months
2. 36 Su-30MK2 ( just crashed 1 ) : delivered : rumored that 12x Su-30SMV signed
3. 3 C-295M delivered , rumored 3 more ordered
4. More than 100 T-90MS tanks ( rumored )
5. 3 Spyder SAM systems ( delivering ) by Israel
6. 6x Molniya 500ton Fast Attack Craft ( each bring 16KH35 AShM ) domestic build : Done, rumored 4 more
7. 4x Gepard class 2000 ton frigate ( 2 delivered, 2 under construction in Russia) rumored 2 more with more advanced weapons

For Vietnam, the most dangerous thing is your army of business.

The list looks fine to me, and i prefer to hear from vietnamese member about their perspective regarding vietnam military weakness.. then maybe we can add something constructive about it.

The big disappointment is : although Vietnam can build 8 OPV 2400 with more than 2000 ton of displacement
but the biggest warships we could build domestic are only Molniya, more or less 500 ton with limited capacity of Air Defence and operating duration at sea , and gunboats at about Molniya size ...

Almost everything, Vietnam choose to buy, not build, including armored vehicles, missiles, SAM, ...

The defence industry can only build Igla-1, RPG, AK, Galil rifles, carbine, Scud ...

The sensors for warships or air defence system , of course , are imports.

The list looks fine to me, and i prefer to hear from vietnamese member about their perspective regarding vietnam military weakness.. then maybe we can add something constructive about it.
