The United States has expressed concern over the harassment and arrest of opposition political leaders and activists in Bangladesh. The country's Foreign Office spokesman Ned Price said in a briefing in Washington on Tuesday local time that his country is concerned about the crackdown on peaceful gatherings of opposition parties.

"We call on all political parties to respect the rule of law and refrain from violence, harassment, and intimidation," Ned Price said.

Ned Price also said, "We call on the government to ensure that no political party or candidate can be threatened, incited, or used to cause violence against another party or candidate."

Regarding the impartial elections in Bangladesh, the spokesperson of the US State Department said, 'To organize a meaningful election, candidates must be given the opportunity to communicate with voters without violence, harassment, and fear. At the same time, I encourage the government to ensure a full, transparent and impartial investigation into the incidents of violence and exemplary punishment of those responsible for these incidents.

In the briefing, Ned Price also said, 'We will call on all parties in Bangladesh to respect the rule of law. At the same time violence, harassment and intimidation should not be done. I will tell the Bangladesh government that all parties can conduct their activities without any form of harassment or intimidation. Besides, I call on the government to ensure a credible, impartial, and transparent investigation into the incidents of torture, violence, and intimidation against opposition activists.

In response to a question, the spokesperson of the US State Department said, "We are aware of the case filed under the Digital Security Act against three people, including Pinaki Bhattacharya. We have made our concerns about this law clear. We have also dealt with this in our human rights report. There has also been an open discussion with the Bangladesh government about our concerns.

I think BNP wants a showdown on 10 December. Otherwise, why call a gathering on the Dhaka roads instead of a field?

Gathering on roads is unlawful in any country. If it is a BNP showdown, let us see how people can gather when all Dhaka roads will be blocked by the Police and BAL activists.

BNP will lose ground if it fails to organize the gathering in Naya Paltan BNP head office.

can someone from bangladesh give a gist of what's been going on with you and the US?
I've read snippets like RAB getting sanctioned etc. What merited the sudden US interest in protecting human rights and democracy after all these years? Is it a china thing?

@Nergal sir?

Well brother @villageidiot , I think there is no issue between Bangladesh and USA.

But it's between Bangladesh and BAL regime.

USA want this pro Russia regime ousted at any cost , want a technocrat govt in Bangladesh and Nobel Laureate Dr Younus as it's head!

As far I understand they want a base in the bay of Bengal and India isn't going to give them.thr base ever.

Also it's hard for Bangladesh to join Chinese bloc , as our export destination is west!

So perhaps USA want to oust BAL govt , this should the clear picture.

However if you are lean towards conspiracy theory ( so called) , I would say Bangladeshi deep state want to oust BAL govt , because perhaps they ( deep state) nowadays can't have full control on BAL.

So ousting BAL is necessary for them in order to sustain their power game , also in order to revive democracy!

Bangladesh clearly follow Pakistan and Egypt when the case is deep state.

But just Bangladeshi deep state maintain much lower profile compared to Pakistan and USA.

Now do your math based on what you see with bare eyes , and what you calculate from.so called conspiracy theory ( which is partly authentic, as no one knows what's actually happening under curtain!

Personally I think , there is no way to handover the power to another political party now with an election. Bangladesh needs a cool down period and a technocrat govt is now necessary.

As if any fair election take place now , BNP will be in power and instantly take revenge on BAL!

The result will be the same as we are observing since years!

So we must need a cool down period for 2/3 years! Then democracy might revive again ; perhaps with a new constitution ,and with revival of presidential form of democracy; or if parliamentary system is continued , then we most abolish article 70 of constitution that actually made Bangladeshi PM ( whoever he/she is ) invincible!

Now we are waiting and observing for the future. Before 10 December I never thought that suddenly police will crackdown on BNP.

Thing are getting more complicated! Many people ( activist and analysts ) predict that it such thing continue soon there will be indirect military takeover like 1/11!

Thanks and best regards!

BNP wanted alternative venues like arambagh! But other than further discussion on it , police started crackdown yesterday. Honestly they should have wait.

And then BNP goes back to hardline and decided to do it on nayapaltan!

Things are getting more complicated! Bangladesh is about to face another hell after 2006 that invited 1/11!

Thank you.

I thought it must have had something to do with china. But I am surprised the US is going hard when it's Russia. Has Bangladesh made any significant overtures towards Russia that made the US get mad, besides not voting against russia on the ukraine issue?

Also, what exactly constitutes the BD deep state, in your opinion? and what is your opinion of Dr Yunus?

Thanks

Actually Russia means sino Russia. But why do you need a naval base in the bay of Bengal? Surely because you want to observe China closely!

Let's not talk about deep state. All people knows what is deep state.

And I've no comment on Dr Younus as well.

I just want a cool down period and then revival of democracy.

Or any Chinese type one party state.

But no single political party of Bangladesh possesses the quality.

So a national unity govt is best options ( where all political parties will have representatives) .

But for this kind of government ( or revival of democracy) we need a non political technocrat govt first , because now even not national unity govt is possible , because BAL BNP and other party consensus looks impossible after yesterday's police crackdown!

Now we have no other way but but to wait and observe!

Thanks and regards!

Thank God! USA concern brought good result! Finally clash might be avoided!

I hope the RAB beats the crap out of BNP.

A political party founded by an idiot and headed by a whore.

Read the biographies of prominent pak generals - tells how BNP’s founder’s wife “comforted” them during the liberation war.

If you really live in UK ( I'm sure you aren't by birth British , but yes it's possible you went to UK for work and residing there! But that didn't change your BCL type terrorist nature) , then British govt either should kick you out!

You are living in a country of democracy and human right, and asking for beating for Bangladeshi people by gunda bahini of your empress!

It's called double standard. You should live in north Korea forever instead of UK!

You really are a paranoid deluded person.

Now you are questioning my birth 🤣🤣🤣

I despise thugs!

In Britain we also have a BNP party.

And I also call for them to be beaten black and blue by our bobbies.

Thugs deserve no mercy.
