What's new

The United States has no qualms about the winner in the national election: US Ambassador

I meant Hasina would never do an Imran Khan. She has learnt from her father’s mistakes.

Appointment himself as the spokes person for Muslims. Go and meet Putin in public lol

Mujib also liked the limelight - publicly embracing US enemies like Indira, Castro to Arafat. Made BD a pariah.

I had a bad feeling when Imran Khan was in Moscow just before the invasion of Ukraine.

Pakistani Generals can be brought very easily and they control all the levers of power.

He had nothing to gain and everything to lose by being there.

Should have just postponed the visit due to “unforeseen” circumstances at home.

Hasina is not emotional but calculating and that is why she is such a good politician.

Yep!

Imran has always liked his own importance.

Even as the cricket captain lol

But he seriously loved Bangladesh and wanted a reconciliation. Sad that Hasina didn’t reciprocate - probably didn’t want to upset India.

More likely that Hasina knew he was not going to last and so why waste time and effort on this.

Pakistan has no consistent foreign policy and so there is no point dealing with them on anything but the very short term.

Excellent point.

Why waste political and personal capital on an intern lol

A second cousin of mine is a big wig in BNP LOL. He says Reza is too arrogant for BD’s retail politics.

Scandinavia, Japan, Germany and Benelux - is about technocratic politics.

US, U.K., India, Bangladesh has always been about retail politics.

An informed and educated population engages on technical details.

An uninformed and disengaged population prefers “trust” - that trust is gained through retail politics.

Reza Kibria should rejoin BAL and take up the finance ministry.

Current finance minister has socialist tendencies and is way above his depth!

I realize you might not like Lotus Kamal because he's not a Sylheti (never mind the fact that he's from Brahmanbaria which is very close to Sylhet anyway).

But although he personally does not come from World Bank/IMF experience/pedigree and may not be academically brilliant he is well-advised by people under him.

You must realize that if Hasina wants to fake numbers a certain way, Mr. Kamal cannot say no.

That at the end of the day is what matters....

I dislike socialism especially in third world countries.

Only Sylhetis and Chittagongians are capitalists at heart and both still follow Sufism. Which keeps them away from left/right extremism.

I particularly distrust west, south and Dhakaya politicians - because they are chetona brainwashed.

All these leftist leaders who destabilised post war Bangladesh came from those regions.

Thus, I can only sleep tight if:

1. Finance is run by a Sylheti
2. Industry by Chittagongian
3. Country led by Hasina

@UKBengali

Finance ministry needs to be run by a heavyweight politician with his own political capital.

Bangladesh had three long serving and charismatic Sylheti finance ministers.

Current one is a political pigmy. Unsuitable for a 450 billion dollar economy.

Reza! You need to step up man!

It should be fine.

Kamal is not a total idiot and good foundations have already been laid before him.

If he is good enough for Hasina, then he is good enough for me.

PS - Even the FT rates him.

He is not as good as Muhith but then who would be?

He has a finance background and has founded/run a successful textile company in BD

Much better qualified than a lot of other Finance Ministers around the world for sure.

Just compare to a lot of the half-wits that became Chancellor in the UK lol.

I am a big fan of Saifur chacha!

Father of Bangladesh economic revival.

If you haven't noticed he is on anti Hasina bandwagon.

Anyway, on a serious note, Mr. Reza Kibria's perception on economy seems to be a total opposite to that of Sheikh Hasina. Reza saheb isn't a big fan of the mega-project on mega foreign loan philosophy. He is more in line with Mr. saifur, Kibria Senior & Muhit on this.

Muhit saheb somewhat found the golden balance between mega project, mega loan & economic equilibrium. He managed to keep Sheikh Hasina happy by supporting her political front & keep the economy growing.

On Mr. Reza again, he is a brilliant man, but not going to happen for him.

And I personally think, Mr. Kamal isn't a total write off. He is trying to follow the line of Muhit but what he lacks is originality and charisma to wiggle out of narrow spots.

Excellent points.

As I said, according to my cousin Reza lacks retail quality.

Totally unsuitable for the rough and tumble of populist Bangladeshi politics.

My cousin, spent an hour narrating his encounter with Reza lol

He had me in stitches….,

I will share it another day hehe

Anyway, Hasina for her sake needs a strong and independent finance minister by her side. One who will protect her from the chetona mob.

Again, I ask Reza to come forward. As one Sylheti to another Sylheti.

We Sylhetis tend to help one another and generally stick together heheh

Don't worry as Hasina is almost indestructible these days. :p:

If she needs extra firepower then even Modi is on her side.

You are at your most vulnerable when you feel indestructible.

True. Based on the experience of Alexander to Maggie.

Better to be a Dionysius - with the proverbial sword hanging above your head!
