When General Malik asked him why he had gone on the mission during Kargil War without proper acclimatisation, Major Sudhir Walia said “Sir, I'm a pahari, I don't need to be acclimatised”. He had led the team that captured the heights of Zulu Ridge on July 25, 1999.

A month later, his unit, Indian Army’s elite 9 Para SF, was tasked with fighting the infiltrators in Kashmir. He led his men from the front and laid down his life fighting for the country on Aug 29, 1999. On the lookout for a terrorist hideout in the Haphruda jungle of Kupwara sector, he and his team had spent the entire night looking for the enemy without success. On the morning of Aug 29, he finally caught up with the infiltrators.

Surprising the enemy, he launched a daring attack that left them stunned. In the ensuing battle, Maj Walia himself killed nine militants. In the gunfire, he was hit in the face, chest and arms. Unable to move, he continued to direct his soldiers that led to the successful completion of the mission and the killing of 20 infiltrators.

It was only 35 minutes after the exchange of fire stopped that he allowed himself to be evacuated. Unfortunately, the brave soldier died on the way to the hospital. He was awarded the Ashok Chakra, the country’s highest peace time gallantry award for going beyond the call of duty in service to the nation.
