Hokkaido - 北海道

Hokkaido is the second largest, northernmost and least developed of Japan's four main islands. Its weather is harsh in winter with lots of snowfall, below zero temperatures and frozen seas, while in summer it does not get as hot and humid as in the other parts of Japan.

With its unspoiled nature, Hokkaido attracts many outdoor lovers....

Daisetsuzan National Park

With a total area 226,000ha, it is the largest national park in Japan. A chain of 2000m-class mountains standing like an immense "roof of Hokkaido", and expansive clusters of alpine plants on the mountains, it is a highly primeval park. It is home to various wild animals including the brown bear.

Japan has stunning scenery (especially northern Japan).

Do you have any pictures of the Ainu people?

. .
The Ainus in Japan number at around 200,000. Most of the pure-blooded Ainu live in the Northern parts of Hokkaido, their ancestral land(s). Their presence is felt in Asahikawa, Kushiro, Nemuro, Shari, Abashiri , Monbetsu , Kitami , Wakkanai. These are large towns in Northern Hokkaido.

Some pictures of Ainu in Hokkaido

Shiretoko Lake Park, Hokkaido

Shiretoko National Park is highly primeval. Sea eagles, Blakiston's fish-owls, and brown bears inhabit the district. The view of the Shiretoko Mountain Chain from the Shiretoko-Goko Lakes, which are surrounded by forests, is splendid. The west side of the Shiretoko Peninsula is covered with drifted ice during winter.

Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park

Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park is the northernmost National Park in Japan. Mt. Rishiri soars majestically above the sea. Rebun Island has many alpine plants such as Rebunsou (Oxytropis megalantha). Sarobetsu Plain, abundant in marsh plants, and Wakasakanai's dunes contribute to the exciting landscape.

Stunning!

I still remember how for a whole class period (40 minutes), our middle school geography teacher made sure we pronounced the names of the main islands of Japan, perfectly. It has stuck with me to this day. :)
