Jupiters 2nd large moon Europa is one of the greatest mysteries in the solar system...
It is slightly smaller than our moon and covered with a thick ice shield. The ice is between 10 and 40 km thick and below that is a 100km deep ocean of liquid salt water. Europa has more water than Earth:
The ocean is heated up from gigantic volcanic eruptions on the sea floor, similar to earth rift zones. The volcanism is triggered from tidal effects created from Jupiter.
Europa is the most life friendly known place in our solar system. Only Enceladus, a moon of Saturn has a similar structure.
Our space agency ESA plans a mission to Europa called JUICE. The JUICE spacecraft will launch in 2022 and target the Jupiter Moons. It will be the first time that a spacecraft will take a closer look on those moons and Europa will be the most interesting target.
What do you think about this? The imagination to find life there is crazy and i´m very excited about this. Imagine how that will be and even more so, what if we find intelligent life? How should we react? And imagine how we would be for them. If intelligent life exists there it would be totally different from us. It would live in an ocean. It would only know darkness and it would not know the sky. They would only know their ocean and on top the thick ice shield.
If you look on this pictures you wonder what is under this lifeless ice desert:
