The Russian-Iranian deal offered to Israel

Russia reportedly proposes that Iran be granted relief from some US sanctions in in return for the removal of its forces from Syria.

21/11/18

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said in a closed hearing on Monday that Russia recently proposed to Israel and the US that Iran be granted relief from some US sanctions that were imposed on it, in return for the removal of Iranian forces and proxies from Syria, Axios reports Tuesday.

Netanyahu's statements came during a hearing of the Foreign affairs and Security Committee of the Knesset, according to the report.

MKs who attended the hearing said Netanyahu did not say whether the Russian proposal was made during his short conversation with President Vladimir Putin in Paris last Sunday, but that it definitely seemed that way from the prime minister's comments.

Iranian retrenchment in Syria is a huge concern for Israel, but the Russian position until now has been, at least publicly, that Iran's presence is legitimate because it came at the Assad regime's invitation. This is the first we're hearing that the Russians have floated an idea for Iran's withdrawal, and that they're linking it to US sanctions.

US President Donald Trump withdrew in May from the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, and has since imposed two rounds of sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

Russia and other European signatories to the 2015 deal did not agree with Trump’s decision to leave the agreement and have been trying to save the accord.

The MKs quoted in the report said Netanyahu spoke favorably about his meeting with Putin, and said the Russians cannot push the Iranians out of Syria on their own, but need help from other world powers.

According to the members of Knesset who attended the hearing, Netanyahu said Russia and the US were discussing ways to limit Iranian influence in Syria — including the Russian proposal on sanctions relief.

Netanyahu said that on November 8, U.S. special envoy for Syria James Jeffrey met in Vienna with Russian officials to discuss the issue. On November 5, three days before the Vienna meeting, Netanyahu met Jeffrey in Jerusalem.

During the hearing, Netanyahu was asked if Israel had expressed a position on the Russian proposal. He said it was at the moment only an idea, and that Israel hasn't formulated a policy on it.

The Russian embassy in Tel Aviv declined to comment on this story. A senior State Department official told Axios, "We remain engaged with the UN ‎and other parties, including Russia, to encourage all possible efforts to advance the political track as called for in UNSCR 2254. We do not however discuss the substance of these diplomatic discussions."

This is a stab in the back and the beginning of foreign control of Syrian political, military and economic conditions.

putin and trump working together to dictate what Tehran can and can not do. Will more sanctions be forth coming with the deal that Iran will stop all missile sales to Syria, no sales of ADS and fighter jets.

This is threats, blackmail and bribery. Washington regime does this and Moscow joining in.

Nothing unusual here...May i am wrong, but sometimes, i feel, Iran is just taking lot of risk for the Palestine issue which is not correct...If Palestine issue is the issue of all Muslim world, why Iran is taking the lead and getting itself sanctioned? Is it not unfair to put its citizen into a difficult situation where the cause of this issue is global in nature??

This has nothing to do with the Palestinians. The invasion of Lebanon, and the planned war with Syria is what the Iranians are getting involved.

All the blue is desired by the zionists. And many tens of millions of arabs better get in their gaza concentration camps.

Hezbollah is standing in the way and so is Assad.

By subjecting Iran to heavy sanctions, Trump administration have strengthened its bargaining power in Syria. Interesting - and very telling. This show that Asians have no GAME.

If Iran gets some kind of concessions, such as sanctions relief or S400/Fighter Jet sales from Russia it might consider that. But, without a three way deal I don't see them pulling out just at Russia's request. Keep in mind their presence is mostly in form of managing proxy groups and not troops on ground. They also have influence with Hezbollah and within Syrian army. Assad will not risk that support, he sees them as strategic allies too. Even though Russia's intervention was most crucial to the regime's survival.

Edit:
Misread and thought it was Russian sanction relief. After knowing that, I doubt it would work out, Trump administration will just reinstate sanctions afterwards and no way Iran trusts them.

Unless it is defined what is meant by 'Iranian pullout'. If it means moving Hezbollah back to Lebanon and removing Iranian advisers(whom organize other proxy groups or groups to support the regime), then not gonna happen.

Wow man, you are getting carried away with your thoughts, Syria(under Assad family) and Iran are allies, nothing to do with Palestinians.

wishful thinking
don't call your dreams, deal
Iran will resist against sanctions and Iran do not make any deal

There is no Russia sanction on Iran. Iran needs no waiver from Trump. Trump can piss off. He's losing 2020 election anyway. Too many non whites in America now.

As if Russian sanction means something!

Clearly putin does not agree with you.

There is a saying in Persian which says"Showing mercy on sharp-fanged leopard would be unjust and cruelty to sheep"
As if we went there 'cause of sanctions.
