The Punjab government is making significant strides in the development of a new glass train project that will connect Rawalpindi and Bhurban in the Murree region. This initiative, aimed at boosting tourism and enhancing transportation infrastructure, has received official approval from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.

Project Overview

  • Route and Distance: The glass train will cover a distance of approximately 65 kilometers, starting from the Saddar area of Rawalpindi and passing through picturesque locations such as the Margalla Hills and Barakahu before reaching Bhurban, a popular tourist destination in Murree.
  • Development Goals: The project is part of a broader development plan for Murree, which includes various initiatives to beautify the area and improve facilities for tourists. The government plans to engage international consultants to ensure the project's successful execution.

Working Group and Feasibility Study

An 18-member working group has been established, comprising representatives from various departments, including transport, tourism, and urban planning. This group is tasked with preparing a comprehensive feasibility study to assess the project's viability and outline its technical and financial aspects. The National Engineering and Scientific Commission (NESCOM) has been commissioned to conduct this study.

Enhancements to Murree

In addition to the glass train project, the Punjab government has approved several measures aimed at enhancing the overall appeal of Murree:
  • Removal of Obstructions: Plans are in place to remove high-rise buildings that obstruct the natural scenery along Mall Road in Rawalpindi and to relocate hotels around GPO Chowk to preserve the area's aesthetic.
  • Infrastructure Improvements: The government has also approved the construction and expansion of the Rawalpindi-Murree-Kashmir Road and the restoration of historical buildings to maintain the cultural heritage of the region.
  • Tourism Promotion: With hundreds of thousands of visitors flocking to Murree annually, these initiatives are expected to significantly enhance the tourist experience and promote local culture.

Conclusion

The glass train project represents a significant investment in the future of tourism and transportation in the Punjab region. By improving access to the scenic beauty of Murree and its surroundings, the government aims to attract more visitors and stimulate economic growth. As the project progresses, it is expected to become a major attraction, offering a unique travel experience that showcases the natural beauty of the area.
