It is very unfortunate that often we take freedom for granted and forget the pain that the generations before us had endured under the yoke of a foreign rule. Such was the pain and stigma of slavery that the great Muslim leader and freedom fighter Maulana Muhammad Ali Jauhar declared at the first Round Table Conference held in London in 1930, that he would not return to India alive unless the country was set free. "I would prefer to die in a foreign country so long as it is a free country," he addressed to the British, and went on, "and if you do not give us freedom in India you will have to give me a grave here." He died in London and was buried in Jerusalem. He had asked in his will that he be buried there because he did not want to return to a "slave country." It would take seventeen more tumultuous years before his namesake Muhammad Ali Jinnah would prise away freedom from the jaws of death. Jinnah would accept a moth eaten Pakistan at great personal cost (the premature death of his young wife and loss of his personal property in Bombay) and national loss (death and destruction in Punjab and Bengal) because time was running out for him. Jinnah, the Great Leader had defied all odds to win liberty for his countrymen. The great struggle had left him too weak and enfeebled to defy the grim reaper. His mission accomplished, Jinnah died almost a year later. A disconsolate but grateful nation buried him atop a hillock overlooking Karachi, his birthplace and the capital of his newly founded country.

I was born ten years after Pakistan became a free country. My children were born nearly forty years later. We all belong to the post-independence era. We are Pakistanis by birth. We have known no other nationality. We have not known slavery. We have savoured the fruits of freedom without having experienced the pangs of slavery. My late father, a student in Lahore's famous Government College, had campaigned for the Muslim League candidate before partition. He often explained that it was important for the sake of freedom that their election campaign was a success. My mother a young teenager, travelled on a military special train to Pakistan, huddled and petrified by the horrors of communal violence that ravaged the countryside. Pakistan meant safety and freedom from fear. It was the promised homeland for Muslims of India and all those who opted to stay here. A new nation state, where they were free to practice their faith and traditions irrespective of caste or creed, and fear or favour. The prominent white margin in the national flag symbolised their rights as minorities in a free state.

The question often asked is whether the dream has gone sour and if indeed it has. where have we erred? Admittedly our record as a free and independent nation has not been unblemished. As we have struggled to find an honourable place for ourselves among the comity of nations, we have committed grave sins. Some of our mistakes may have not been entirely of our own making but other more grievous and fatal wounds have been self-inflicted. In most cases we have suffered by sacrificing national interests at the altar of self-interest.

What we need to understand is that our struggle for freedom had cost our earlier generations dearly. Some had died yearning for a free homeland. Those, who could make a choice didn't even want an interment in a colonised country. Others, more fortunate ones left behind their native land to begin anew in a strange and alien surrounding. The choice of freedom was too great to forego and ignore. Most of them took the plunge without a second thought. Some succeeded in making a successful life for themselves, others could not prosper but none thought of going back. They had turned the leaf and they simply had to move on in life. Mercifully we are not presented with any stark choices that those before us had to contend with. True, some of us go through great deal of trouble to immigrate to more prosperous countries. There is no harm in seizing better opportunities and improving the quality of life. The only thing to remember is that we are blessed with a free country, where we can do our best to thrive and flourish and in the bargain add to our nation's wealth.

In these times of doom and gloom, we need to reflect on how bad it was before we became a free nation or how worse it could have been if we had continued to languish under colonial rule. See for example the misery of the Kashmiris, protesting against the cold blooded murder of their youth in the streets of Srinagar and chanting the slogans of AZADI (liberty) and ‘Go India Go;’ and the plight of the Palestinians, who are hostages in their own country, where no freedom flotilla can reach them. Freedom is a cherished commodity for all who possess it and for those who strive for it.

Sir, the concept of freedom is indeed a romantic one, but a solomn one as well. Sadly, the current generation is so embroiled with trying to make ends meet in terms of landing a good job, paying bills or any other flail nitty gritties of life that it has ceased to fathom what freedom means to them. This is true largely in Pakistan. Most other countries I have visited in the Gulf have been debauched to such a large extent with the prospect of worldly pleasures that they have lost their identity, they are little more that wild beasts, without purpose. In the Far East, it is different. They may not be as patriotic as Pakistanis, but behave as a nation, with civility and observe laws of their respective lands.

Pakistanis, are one of the most patriotic people in the world. and they yearn to serve Pakistan in any capacity. But, what we fail to understand is that this freedom is much more a geographical land mass. It is the bloodiest account of an exodus in the 20th century. And unparalleled in the way it was formed by M.A. Jinnah Sahab.

The true worth and meaning of freedom can only be understood from the hearts, minds and plight of the Kashmiris and Palestinians. Sadly a good part of our nation only relates to freedom as hoisting a flag on 14th August and singing the national anthem, on the other side, their are hordes and hordes of Pakistanis who pray daily for Pakistan and work for the prosperity of Pakistan. Pakistan is indeed an unfinished phenomenon. Don't despair Sir, the dark days are coming towards their end InshaAllah.

I love my country to the core, and did so even when I didn't understand why I should love Pakistan. It is a feeling imbedded to become a part of me. And that is what I feel needs to be ingrained in the multitude of teenagers and (so-called) adults of Pakistan. TO LOVE PAKISTAN, EVEN IF THEY DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY IT NEEDS TO BE DONE!:pakistan:

Today's generation and those generations who didn't witness the creation in 47 won't know what freedom is like. If it didn't happen, expect us to be same way like today Kashmir is. Though how desperately I want the youth of today to recognize this and the value of those 5 Million lives we sacrificed for Pakistan, it was solely for Muslims to live their lives in Islamic environment. This is not seen anywhere today. The point I am talking about is the atheist turning views of muslim born youth, and practicing everything but Islamic teaching in every corner. If we did, we wouldn't have been in the mess.

The government officials would have done their work with sincerity and honesty. Though these are all gonna go soon, I am worried about our youth who will take up their positions. Looking at today's modern and atheist turning youth, which is indeed bitter thing to witness, I feel the coming time of Pakistan is going to turn out to be worse. God forbid. Our people just dont care for what we gave 5 million lives for! I break down on this fact! The only hope we have is, enlighten the youth of the past and their responsibilities and duties which are obligation for them, to make this Nation survive!

But for this, we need to make them understand and follow Islam, the base of Pakistan's creation and back of this Nation.

It is indeed a tragic dilema that we have forgotten and forsaken the sacrifices of those who paved the way for the creation of our dear Pakistan. No doubt it seems that we have deviated much from the initial cause but Sir, there are segments of the youth. The elite youth doesn't really matter sir, neither can any good in expected from them, but in all verasity the true youth of Paistan is awakening from the slumber sir, don't loose hope sir.

Let me tell you some heartening news. The other day, while attending the Friday prayer, the Imam said that in the last 4-5 years, he has witnessed an astonishing change. He said that never in his time in the mosque (which is at least 27 years) has he seen the numbers of muslims coming to offer salat increase so rapidly than in the last 4-5 years. He added that this is not restricted to Friday prayers but has been observed at all 5 times and 7 days a week. The increase is at least 10 fold! Sir I tell you this as I agree that muslims need to get back to the foundation, the genesis of Islam. That is happening! Increasing numbers of youth are intruiged by Jinnah Sahab and Iqbal Sahab. Islam is indeed going through a resurgence sir. I can vouch for myself as well. I am a changed person from within. I introspect more and practice more. And I know that I am not alone in this endevor.

As far as our corrupt regime is concerned, its days are numbered, and one way or another, through bloodshed or concerted rallying, Pakistanis will not tolerate another regime of the likes of the present ones. The powers that be know it and are working towards it. They know of the frustration and desolate anger brewing within us. And they know well enough that these will have to be taken care of if we want to surmount. Sir, Allah is not weary of anything, and IF He wills it he will bring about a new people who will not disobey Him. The crux of the matter are two, one being repentance, and the second rectifying our ways.

Allah says in the Quran:
'Surely you will indulge in sinful acts, some small and others large in magnitude, but never involve in the biggest of sins, and that is loose hope in your Lord!'

And Again:

'As long as the children of Adam repent, so long shall thy Lord keep pardoning them!'

Saya e Khuda e Zuljalaal!! Keep trying and praying sir, the night is ending, the dawn is just at a little distance, The prophecy is upon us! :pakistan:

I agree to each and every part of your post!
Except for the bold one. Yes they are arrogant and live lives of princes and princesses, and wont look down to us or Pakistan.
They have everything they want in the world and wont lose it.

Still we must worry about them too. We must try to convince them with our tongues and hearts, with love. If Allah wills, they will change for good. We cannot neglect them unless they are tried with. But the bitter fact is, it is the elite youth who will bear the government tomorrow. Hence they are our hope. A for a normal teenager, I am proud of them. The way they have changed and improved, I have judged and witnessed it through my NGO which is for Awareness within the youth.

In sha Allah our youth will turn out to be better than what we expect from them today.
Cheers.

ok sir my apologies..i thought u learned from past mistakes:)

Oh yes we learned to keep our people happy and not in any dilemma or complex, cause terrorists like Mukhti Bahni can come anduse their weakness against them. I guess BLA desperately trying to do the same, but failing in agony as we did learn from the mistakes in 71.

Nice analysis. Try doing the same from bangladeshi point of view, then Indian point of view.

And then revisit current analysis. You wont be so sure about your assertions.

This is replete with distortion and historical error. Leaving aside the myriad other flights of fancy, would it be possible to explain how the death of Ruttie Jinnah, estranged from her husband, long before Jinnah returned from the UK to lead the AIML, is a sacrifice that was made at the altar of Pakistani freedom?

We can look at other mutilations later.
