The killing of sub-inspector Altaf Ahmed in Jammu and Kashmir is a major blow for counter terrorism operations. The officer who had mastered the art of tracking terrorists was shot dead by a Lashkar-e-Tayiba terrorist at Bandipore.

Ahmed along with his colleagues were on a covert mission at Bandipore to track down Abu Qasim a notorious Lashkar operative.

However one of the terrorists hiding behind a vehicle shot Ahmed. He was rushed to hospital in a critical condition where he declared dead.

The importance of Altaf Ahmed ‎

Ahmed's death is a major blow to counter terror operations in Kashmir.

The recipient of the President's medal for gallantry Ahmed has been part of counter terrorism operations.

He had taken part nearly in 130 encounters with terrorists and arrested around 100 militants as well.

His colleagues in Kashmir tell OneIndia that he had a special knack while dealing with terrorist operations.

He had risen from the ranks of a constable and was a keen learner.

He had over the past ten years mastered the art of tracking terrorists using the mobile phones.

Ahmed was precise when it came to tracking terrorists and there are hardly any instance where he missed the target.

However on Wednesday his luck ran out and he was shot by a terrorist hiding behind a vehicle. It appeared as though the terrorists ‎had advance information about the raid at Bandipore.

A brave son of Kashmir

Ahmed was a brave son of Kashmir.

Dedicated to the job he put his duty above self. He was often referred to as cyber boy as he relied heavily on technology.

He had managed to neutralise at least 50 terrorist training camps in Kashmir.

His death has come as a major shock to the police force.

Director General of Police Rajinder Kumar said that the force has lost a great officer and he is unable to come to terms with the news of his death.

The Kashmir police will find it difficult to find another officer like him.

One of his colleagues say that Ahmed would often say that he would retire only after each terror camp in Kashmir is neutralised.

We will miss him and this is a huge set back for the war on terror at Kashmir, his colleague also added.
