The lies and triangulations of Imran Khan

By Saroop Ijaz

Published: March 10, 2012

When the educated, prudent Imran Khan supporter is asked for her views on the unbelievably grand proclamation of the ‘dear leader’ stating that he will uproot corruption in 19 days and eradicate terrorism in 90 days, there are always two slants, often one after the other. The devotee will inevitably begin by arguing how Imran Khan will unquestionably and quite breezily achieve the said objectives in the self-stipulated time period. If the line of reasoning is further pursued (or reasoning used at all), they will gingerly and sheepishly concede that statements might not be susceptible to literal implementation, but making an invigorated comeback, state that he is better than everyone else and has built a cancer hospital and who else could they vote for etc? At this point a smirk breaks out on the face of the PTI foot-soldier; to them it is the clincher. The best argument for Imran Khan is something which can be vaguely phrased as some notion of the ‘lesser evil’. There is some difficulty in grasping the concept of how the subsequent quantitative judgment about less or more is precisely made, once the qualitative determination of ‘evilness’ has been reached.

Let me be plain on the matter, the proclamations of Imran Khan on corruption and terrorism and the arbitrary, flashy deadlines are untrue on their face. They require no elaborate refutation, and a child of 10 having average intelligence should see through them, unless of course they have uncritical love blinding them. This brings us to the question of motive, here again an unflattering binary is unavoidable; either he is lying by design or he does not possess the fortitude to understand and realize what he says. At a core level, it is a choice between deceit and self-deceit. I do not think Imran Khan is fantastically intelligent, but he is decent by cricketer/politician standard. Hence, because he is not severely mentally handicapped, it is safe to say that he does know what he promises is not only undoable, it is impossible that he will get anywhere close to these deadlines in the best of circumstances. The blatant misrepresentations cannot be attributed to Spartan simple-mindedness or childlike innocence; it is done with complete knowledge. Therefore, even to put it at its mildest, Imran Khan is deliberately and consciously lying.

The spirited defence of this lie telling would be, even if he is, so what, all politicians lie, at least he is not corrupt etc. That maybe so, but the mediocrity of his lies is really the crowning insult. It is either sheer laziness or he takes all of us for mere peasants (used metaphorically, as he has little to do with the real peasants). All politicians lie in Pakistan, but Imran Khan does it with a self-righteous impunity and feels he can go completely over the top. All of us, even his supporters, perhaps especially his supporters, should take some offence. George Bush, once reportedly mutilated and modified the famous words of Lincoln by saying, “you can fool some people all of the time, and those are the ones you would want to concentrate on”. To not acknowledge or confront all of this will make the PTI more ‘cultish’ than any other party on which the same charge is levelled by them. It has one slightly deep implication as well, it reduces all politics to apology and trickery, turns it into a circus. Maybe it was true for our politics before the Kaptaan came along, but he is certainly raising the intensity and lowering the bar for hypocrisy. The leaden irony here is that he does all of this, while continuing with his anti-politician and even anti-politics, GHQ-favouring rhetoric.

Imran Khan further believes that the Taliban are not a threat to Pakistan, and reciprocally the Taliban now believe Khan to be a good chap; it is really getting quite mushy. Before one gets all moist and husky at this love affair, also bear in mind that Khan believes that liberals are the “scum” of Pakistan and are the most despicable and dangerous group. Never mind the minorities; they are not a sufficient percentage of the electorate for even superficial consolations to be advanced to them. If it is possible to ‘out-Taliban’ the Taliban themselves, this is it. Sympathiser or apologist might be ineffective for the purpose of conveying real meaning. Not those “brothers” of ours blowing mosques, hospitals and schools up, the real threat is from the uncovered ladies, the Marxists and the whisky drinkers etc who are really to be taken to task. The logic of this should be obvious. And this is the party dominated by the urban elite and with a large proportionate representation of smart, educated women. An amusing denial of this is, that he is really faking it only to get power, once he does, he will go all Mustafa Kamal Ataturk on us. Hold your laughter though; the joke might be on us.

Imran Khan speaks of his fondness for the Taliban, Islamic welfare state (what that exactly is remains a historical mystery), liberal scum and female emancipation, progressive thought etc in the same breath, with complete absence of any embarrassment. Triangulation, a term perhaps most popularly used by Christopher Hitchens in regards to the politics of Bill Clinton is the concept of taking a few, best and most populist notion from both ends of the ideological spectrum and create a non-ideological, non-principled middle ground. In Imran Khan’s case it is certainly triangulation, however, it seems that he is drawing disproportionately heavily from the ultra-religious right rhetoric.
The relative rise of Imran Khan has brought another disturbing and anti-democratic tendency to our already sordid political culture. Any argument against Imran Khan is addressed by attacking the credibility of the accuser or the questioner, often in disobliging terms. This leaning towards the ad hominem is unmistakably indicative of a fascist tendency. Imran Khan cannot and should not be given a free pass to get away with the crudest of lies and terrorist apology.

Come on, politicians say these things all the time, little bit of promise (although a lie) is not unexpected.
Nobody believes specific deodorent can get you girls, and voters are smart enough to know this is just a promise which should be judged on its intent rather than actual feasibility.
Only Imran's fanboys will think otherwise, if you have his picture as your avatar, you need not reply to my post.

I was fan of PTI not because of what Imran Khan's promises but the fact that he had new faces and there was hope that we will be able to get ride of few families ruling Pakistan, But now all those from whom people want to get ride are joining PTI

Infect i hate current version of democrazy where majority of idiots decides the fate of intellectual minority.

Great article. Only people blinded by his distortion of change won't see the lies of IK and his feudal landlord goons. The author rightly said IK goes with the flow to fool everyone or anyone he would say something to the Indians over Kashmir another to Pakistanis. If he had the guts he would have told people the truth and accept fixing Pakistan would require some time rather than usual BS of 19 days and 30 days. It is a daunting task. Not to mention his covert alliance with fanatic nut jobs.

What else would a cricketer with an under-developed brain say?

I think the writer of the article is wrong in expecting some sanity and common sense from a guy who can only throw a cricket ball and then run after it.

what a stupid and ghatya article this is, the author of this article is a big jahil if you ask me, and 2 posters are even bigger jahils then the author,

ill start with z9-ec, first of all dude u have no right to talk crap about Imran because ur mushi unlce is a traitor, he signed NRO, that idiot killed Akbar bugti that flamed the Balauchistan issue even more.

and waffan ss, i dont even know what to say to u really, Imran Khan has under-developed brain because hes trying to eliminate corruption from Pakistan? he wants to make Pakistan a better place, is that why his brain is under-developed ?

people like you who hide behind computers are not going to fix our country, Imran khan won us a world cup ,what has ur nawazardari done for Pakistan except looting this poor country.

Imran Khan is our hero, he is hero of the nation, believe it or not i hated politics more then anything until Imran Khan gave me a hope, a hope for a better country.

dude i dont know how old are you, do u think in a country like Pakistan, who is gonna give votes to new faces? im pretty sure even someone from your family would not give a vote to new person, Imran khan needs old faces to win election so he can do something, if he cant win the election then what is he going to do in politics?. Even my family, we always gave votes to Chaudrys, my whole village does, and they will do it again no matter what happens, you just cant change them, so that is why Imran needs old faces so he can get some votes.

Imran Khan has said many many times that he will never ever compromise on his dreams and the promises he made, and he needs over 1000 candidates to form a government, and 70-80% of them will be new faces. Trust me.

a lawyer is not trained by default for management, ask us, half the problems a company faces is because of its incompetent top management, Im not even applying fish bone rule... now air marshall Rao will be PIA head, you will see the difference...

and secondly its about strategy, a politician is a strategist, he plans for next elections, and if he is a statesman like Imran khan, he plans two things... elections and next generation.

I am not sure why would anyone take 90 days promise as a thing that would turn Pakistan into paradise, it requires no wisdom but just common sense that by 90 days he means to layout his 5 year strategy to "control", and in 5 years a strategic plan for the next generation...

secondly its metaphorical as we Pakistanis only understand the language is absolute terms, and not in their relative sense...

only a raw mind would take things by letter and not by the spirit... (I hope he reads and know what is meant by these two terms)

tribune is known for its anti-pti articles, whenever they run out of negative news to post about, they start bashing pti, anyways, pti ftw!!! :pakistan:

read between the lines... its not about Imran Khan...

Dude - First, Don't go on personal level, i am sure i am older than you. Second, In Pakistan we need revolutionary change, if you think people are not ready to give chance to new faces than you must be sure that people are not ready for change yet. Changing underwear with other person will not help, to get ride of sh!t you need new one.

Couple of months i visited Pak, although my visit was short and couldn't meet many people but feeling i got is that IK's vote bank is mostly young and most of them are not eligible to cast the vote, and old people still have same mentality, for example they were happy that mr. x has build 3 new roads and 2 fly overs so he deserved vote in next election

You can uproot corruption in 90 days, Kick out top 2 ranks of Bureaucrats and Security Forces and appoint honest persons, kick out at-least top 3 ranks of police. Sack the top management of state owned organization and advertise the vacancies to get talented people and annually evaluate their performance against the targets and link all their incentives to achievement of targets.

But old faces will not let you do that :disagree:

It seems southern part of pakistan is not accepting imran khan as undisputed future leader ..as far as educated people concerned He is getting support from all over the country apart from mpm strongholds..

But as per experience goes educated people alone not enough to convert support in to seats .
My guess is tehreek e insaaf will be one of major party as far as vote share is concerned in next election .. But to have enough seats to form govt they have to wait for another 5 year or go for a coalition with another major party ..

He brings fresh air to the rotten politics but people take time to feel comfortable with new atmosphere, fresh or not ..

that is the biggest challenge... to actually carry out his plans and designs, he would require constant help from public and Army as a thunderbolt... unfortunately neither army nor public is ready for change, they have fears of the unknown.

Dear - He need to have support from public and we should get ride of army elite controlling the fate of 180 million people. If PTI is sincere and public is with them than why they hell they need support from generals who belongs to the list where you need cleanup.
