Lockheed Martin And United Technologies Corporation Are In The Race For $8B Indian Navy Helicopter Tender | idrw.org

The Indian Navy is planning to buy 120+ multi-role helicopters in a tender worth $8B. The Navy already asked helicopter manufacturers for details. Lockheed-Martin (LMT) and United Technologies Corporation (UTX) stand a good chance with the MH-60R Seahawk. Conditions required in the deal are possibly technology transfer and probably local assembly or co-manufacturing. In this decade, the Indian armed forces are going to acquire more than 1000 new helicopters to replace aging helicopters in their inventories. India wants to rely less on Russian equipment, which offers opportunities for aerospace manufacturers from the US and Europe. This huge renewal operation is one of the largest in this decade. Boeing (BA) is in the final stages of selling India H-47 Chinook and AH64 Apache helicopters as part of this renewal process. Indian Navy requires a anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare and special forces operations capable multi-role helicopter. The Lockheed-Sikorsky as Lockheed calls it - MH-60R Seahawk is the likely candidate that will be offered, considering the requirements. Sikorsky is the helicopter division of United Technologies Corporation.

I dont know why people are going haywire on this,Wasnt this demand of Indian navy from a long time??
Yes, the demand has been there for a long time, and I think that is precisely why people are angry - because they are still only planning for it. These things ought to happen quicker.

Indian Navy is vital for the defense of India and India needs to develop IN as fast as it can.

I'm sure this is going to raise an eyebrow with Putin..especially with the Crimea thing and who his friends are.

We don't pay our hard earned money to retain friends. Such friendship is not worth having, and cannot really be termed "friendship". We will buy whatever suits our needs from whoever will supply it for a good price.

Besides, India is buying a helluva lot from Russia anyway.

Getting American toys on such a scale will land India in shit one day, what with Damocles sword always hanging over our heads in the form of sanctions! Can we trust the Yanks? Even the Tejas program was delayed and held up for years due to this. India should now get ready to be blackmailed.

Will we ever learn? Doesn't look like it.

8 billion for 120 choppers ?
Means $66 mil a pop
To put it into perspective one of these choppers will cost same as 3 JF-17s :D
Does it include life cycle cost ?
