The Fight against PKK Terrorism

The outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has 11 new generation missiles in northern Iraq, Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu has stated, saying this is a result of ties between the PKK and the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD), an ally of the West.

“The PKK holds 11 new generation missiles in the north of Iraq. We know they come from the West,” Soylu said in an April 14 interview on private broadcaster NTV.

“Since the PKK and the PYD are the same thing, the PKK/PYD is using whatever exists in that war environment. It has become a laboratory for them,” he added.

Turkey considers the PYD, which cooperates with both Russia and the U.S. in Syria in fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), as a terror group linked to the PKK, and has long called on the two countries to give up such an alliance.

Meanwhile, Soylu also said security forces have caught three suspects in a bombing with a tunnel dug under a military vehicle repair facility in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır on April 10 and they were pursuing a fourth suspect.

Speaking live on NTV, the minister shed tears while responding to a question on the most difficult part of his seven months served in the post so far.

“I cannot stop myself [from crying] while reading letters from the children of martyrs. They stay near my desk,” he said.

“They say, ‘Uncle Süleyman, don’t let the blood of my father remain in the ground,’” Soylu said, using a Turkish expression for revenge.

The military stated on April 14 that Turkish security forces had killed 29 PKK militants over the previous seven days,.

In a regular statement on counter-terrorism operations in eastern and southeastern Turkey, the General Staff said five senior militants were among those killed, while 44 PKK shelters were destroyed.

The statement also detailed the seizure of 63 improvised explosive devices, nine rocket-propelled grenade launchers, 54 rifles, two machine guns and 21 pistols, as well as bomb-making equipment.

In a separate statement, the military had said five PKK militants were killed early on April 14 in the Çukurca and Şemdinli districts in the southeastern province of Hakkari, which borders Iraq and Iran.

The militants were attempting to “infiltrate” security posts when they were killed, the statement added.

One soldier and one village guard were killed in a PKK attack in the Çatak district of the eastern province of Van on April 14, Doğan News Agency has reported.

PKK militants detonated a hand-made explosive trapped on a culvert in the Çatak-Pervari road during a security check.

One non-commissioned officer and one village guard were killed in the attack.

Security forces conducted an air-supported operation in the region to apprehend the militants responsible for the attack.

Erdogan says dialogue may start if PKK fully disarms

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan outlined the possibility of a new solution process for the PKK conflict.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan left the door open for dialogue with the PKK, provided the terror group completely disarmed.

Erdogan speaking during a campaign speech ahead of Sunday's referendum, said the PKK should take note of the decision by ETA, the armed organisation that has waged a bloody 40-year independence campaign in Spain and France but recently gave up its arms.

"Just like ETA, who as you know recently gave up their arms, they [PKK] need to bury all their weapons, and they need to bury the locations and coordinates for these weapons also."

"But, to assume you can keep your weapons and still sit down to talk, this will not happen. This is the process from here on out."

"Our resolve is clear, in the last 20 months, we have neutralised over ten thousand terrorists."

"Let ETA be your guide and example."

ETA is a separatist group which was formed in the late 1950s during the dictatorship of Francisco Franco with the aim of establishing an independent Basque state in northern Spain and southern France.

The PKK, which was established in 1974 in Ankara, began launching terror attacks in 1984. Armed clashes and acts of violence have continued on and off for more than 30 years and claimed more than 40,000 lives.

In July of 2015, its umbrella organisation, the KCK, unilaterally ended a two and a half year-long ceasefire with the Turkish state and resumed its terror activities.

HDP, a predominantly pro-Kurdish Party linked to the PKK terror organisation, has stated in the past that the PKK wanted to resume talks with the Turkish government after suffering heavy losses and not getting adequate support from citizens in eastern Turkey.

Turkey has remained steadfast in its fight against the terror group, effectively dealing major blows to the organisation in and out of Turkey.

Five soldiers killed, 45 PKK militants ‘neutralized’ in ops in one week: Military

Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militants were “neutralized” during operations in the country’s southeastern region over the past week, the Turkish military stated on April 21.

The Turkish General Staff said in a statement that security forces conducted broad and middle scale operations targeting PKK militants in the Şırnak-Beytüşşebap, Hakkari-Yüksekova, Diyarbakır-Lice, Batman-Sason, Mardin-Dargeçit and Bitlis-Merkez regions between April 14 and 20 to halt their preparations for the spring-summer season.

It said 45 PKK militants were “neutralized” during the operations in the related regions.

Authorities use the word “neutralized” in their statements to imply the militants in question were either killed, wounded or captured.

The military also stated that five soldiers were killed during the operations while another five were wounded.

It also added that security forces seized 13 infantry riffles, one machine gun, five guns, one grenade thrower and 17 hand grenades.

Another 34 hand-made explosives were destroyed while 1.250 kilograms of ammonium nitrate and explosive materials were seized in the operations, it said.

A total of eight sanctuaries and caves used by the militants as shelters were destroyed, according to the military.

It also stated that four vehicles suspected to have been prepared to be used in potential bomb attacks were also seized.

In addition, security forces seized 9.950 kilograms of cannabis, 650 kilograms of powdered hashish, 12.5 kilograms of drugs and 55.240 packs of smuggled cigarettes, the military stated.

A total of 2,983 people attempting to illegally cross the border were apprehended during security controls, it said.

Separately, two soldiers were killed and another two were wounded on April 21 during clashes with PKK militants in the Andaç region of Şırnak, Doğan News Agency reported.

According to the statement, security forces have carried out 321 operations targeting the terrorists between April 17 and 24.

185 suspects with links to Daesh terrorist organization have been detained, while 26 other suspects with links to other terror groups have been detained.

Security forces have also captured 13 PKK terrorists, and seized 2 tons of chemicals used in explosives making, 65 hand grenades and 77 weapons, the statement added.

A total of 63 hideouts have been destroyed, while 30 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and mines have been destroyed.

The PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by the U.S., EU and Turkey, claims to fight for Kurdish self-rule in southeastern Turkey, and has killed thousands of civilians in more than three decades of terror attacks. More than 4,000 security personnel and over 2,000 civilians have also been injured by the terrorist group.

4 PKK targets destroyed in anti-terror operations in northern Iraq, Turkish military says

344

Four PKK targets were destroyed in anti-terror operations conducted by Turkish warplanes in northern Iraq, the Turkish military said late Monday.

According to military sources, three shelters and an ammunition depot belonging to PKK terrorists in the Metina region were destroyed in airstrikes.

The operation was conducted between 5.15 p.m. and 5.40 p.m. and the jets have returned to their bases safely, the sources added.

The Turkish government has intensified its counter-terror operations against the PKK, which is recognized as a terrorist organization by the U.S., the EU and Turkey.

Formed in 1978, the terrorist group had been fighting the Turkish government for an independent state until the early 2000's. The group then shifted its goal to autonomy in the predominately-Kurdish regions of Turkey.
