The Economist Gives China Its Own Section

Alexander Abad-Santos Jan 27, 2012

China is totally important and just like the United States and Britain, it now has its own special section in The Economist. "In this issue we launch a weekly section devoted to China. It is the first time since we began our detailed coverage of the United States in 1942 that we have singled out a country in this way," reads the opening lines to The Economist's "China and the Paradox of Prosperity" cover story in January 28 issue. The reason? This may be a bit scary if you're an American: " The principal reason is that China is now an economic superpower and is fast becoming a military force capable of unsettling America." Mediabistro has more from John Micklethwait, the magazine's editor-in-chief:

"I decided that China’s emergence as a global power justified giving it a section of its own ... It also allows us to devote more space each week to covering the deeper social, political and economic issues in the country, especially the China beyond Beijing and Shanghai. That is how we built up the reputation of the American Survey. We hope the China section becomes the starting point for anyone who wants to know more about this absorbing, complicated country."

I don't get it.. why is it so hard for you to add a link of source in the articles you post?

Mods, are you watching ??

.
Yes I saw that, it was the front-page article on the most recent edition of the Economist.

They now think that we should have an entire section to ourselves. :D (Previously we were in the "Asia" section).

Though I disagree when they said that China is an "economic superpower". Even in just an economic context, the word superpower is annoying.

. . .
This is the first time they have done this for any country since they did it for the USA.

The Economist is an normally a very right-wing publication, however they seem quite obsessed with China's economic model of state capitalism.
