The Crisis of Poverty In America

More than 46 million Americans live below the official poverty line—which is now approximately $23,021 for a family of four—and over 16 million children are poor in this country. Inequality of wealth has reached record highs—it is greater than at any time since 1929. Growing portions of the nation’s wealth are concentrated in the possession of a small fraction of households, while more than one third of the U.S. population is trying to get by on incomes less than 200 percent of the federal poverty line—or about $44,000 for a family of four. Well before the current economic crisis, 6 million low-income households were paying more than half their income on rent and utilities, or lived in severely substandard housing. And the most recent data for 2011 revealed that 48.8 million people, including 16.2 million children, lived in a household struggling against hunger.

Now, increasing unemployment, high prices for gas and food, and a continuing foreclosure crisis are putting growing numbers of families at risk, exacting a high moral and economic cost on all Americans. In fact, in 2007, the Center for American Progress estimated that childhood poverty alone cost the nation roughly $500 billion. A recent report from the Half in Ten campaign reveals that the cost has likely risen by billions of dollars in the past three years due to increasing economic insecurity.

The problems economically struggling people face have been exacerbated by lack of affordable child care, health care, transportation, and other structures necessary to make sure work pays; dangerous predatory lending practices; barriers to unionization; cuts in social spending; and exclusionary politics at all levels that hobble meaningful public participation and accountability in government.

The recent CNN report proved that the poverty line which is defined by governors is nothing more than a big lie.

Currently more than a hundred million of American citizens are hungry and need public funds to stay alive. They receive their daily foods by national funded organizations

total population : about 320 million
population needing assistance: about 67 million
thats about 21%

that includes ALL assistance programs.
the people receiving food stamps (SNAP) are about 41 million.. not 100 million as you claim.

A poor in America is probably better off than a middle-class guy in Iran. Standard of what a poor is different in developed countries like USA

Well, that's exact number of hungry people that are known by governmental institutions. Including poor people and the ones never recognized by government is far more than that number.

The people that sleep on the streets of USA, homeless and jobless should be added to that number period. However CNN has made it clear that governors are lying about poverty line and the exact number of hungry people who are begging for daily food

That's your crap

I heard panhandling is a booming business in america. the two ladies in above pictures certainly dont look starving to me. their dogs look well fed too

Do USA and Iran have the same barometer of what constitutes poverty line? NO.

http://www.borgenmagazine.com/poverty-iran-rise/

Poverty in Iran, as defined by the Iranian government, means a monthly income of less than 180,000
toman, the equivalent of roughly $600, for a family of five people.

Thats $7200 per year for Iran compared to $23000 in US.
Com'on man! stop kidding me. You need to compare the price of goods in both countries too. How can you ignore that in Iran you can buy a kilogram of lamb meat for only 10 $ but in USA you have to pay almost 36 $. Almost 3.6X of price in Iran. Most of prices have the same situation in USA so please don't compare our prices with theirs.

Meanwhile look at this :
This is from 2012, we are in 2017 and i am sure the number has multiplied.
However, again, this is what their government says which is debunked by CNN. The exact number of hungry folks in USA is far more than what governments claim

So it is good to be a homeless on the street??

@Khan_21
LOL, i have calculated the cost of a kilogram of lamb meat in USA in pound. You need to multiply it.

72$ in USA is equal to a Kg of lamb meat in USA

Not sure about booming but they make $100-$300 a day ($36,500-$109,500 a year) just asking for handouts. That’s more than the average salary in most countries. People wonder why a flood of illegals are trying to get in.

She could just be moving or having a garage sale
Or she could just be a woman walking her dogs in the street.

But there are serious problems in America.
Many because of its racism in past and present.

Colored people were cornered in low income neighborhoods. Which generated less tax revenue. Thus were subject downward spiral. Still cant recover.

Rich White neighborhoods are still going strong and get the best of everything.
But if you go to South side Chicago or Detroit. You would get to see real American decay.

That’s mainly because of suburbanization. After WW2 as incomes rose people moved out of dense cities and became landowners of newly built homes in the suburbs. Unfortunately those who did not see an income rise were left in the cities.

That was also based on race and was called White Flight. Whites resisted selling houses to Blacks. Even if a Black family did move in, they were either harassed or the whole neighborhood would sell their property to move away. Thats why u see majority of Blacks living in cities and overpowering majority of whites concentrated in suburbs and rural area.

Your current President's property firms are notorious for discriminating against people of color(His father was more heavily engaged in it)
