Which countries churn out the most engineering graduates every year? When it comes to engineering degrees, the United States, Japan and other developed nations produced the majority of the world’s graduates over past few decades. However, things have started to change and a significant number of new engineering, manufacturing and construction graduates now come from developing and emerging countries.

According to research conducted by the World Economic Forum(which excludes China and India due to lack of data), Russia leads the way, producing an annual total of 454,000 graduates in engineering, manufacturing and construction. The United States is in second position with 237,826 while Iran rounds off the top three with 233,695. Developing economies including Indonesia and Vietnam have also made it into the top 10, producing 140,000 and 100,000 engineering graduates each year respectively.

Yes, but, Sadly how many of the bright engineers stay in Iran? Iran needs to create an environment were all our best and brightest want to stay in Iran and not go abroad and end up working for NASA etc. Sadly, Iran has a long way to go to fix the mismanagement of the country. As long as there is mismanagement, there will not be the environment which makes these guys want to stay! We need to create great opportunities for them within Iran.

It is not how many graduates you have but how much talent you have which depends on the quality of the education. Turkey's construction industry is a whopping 110 billion US dollars compared to Iran's construction industry which is 38 billion US dollars.

"A total of 33 Turkish construction/contracting companies were selected for the Top International Contractors List prepared by the Engineering News-Record in 2009; which made the Turkish construction/contracting industry the world's 2nd largest in that year, ranking behind China."

Indian Institutes of Vedic Science graduates are not really called engineers.

I think they are called something else. Why would otherwise Forbes not list them, :-)
What would you say about China my friend? They were also not listed.

Also it is best to be able to keep all of these talents in Iran. but this is not a bad thing. Those immigrants act like a bridge and transfer technology to Iran. This has already happened. One of them was the case of the engineer who allegedly passed F-35 engine design information to Iran. Other example is Dr. Samie who is now returning to Iran to found one of the biggest neurosurgery hubs in the world.

Back in the days of Roman empire, there were people from today's Germany, France and England who went to live in Rome, however, a number of them always returned and laid the foundation of today's mighty countries. Same is true about modern Japan, India and China.

Some Iranian engineers are always better to leave (the types that we have a couple of examples in this forum as well). It is best both for them and Iran. Some engineers like me have spent their most productive days in Iran and then left.

Iran has the highest expansion rate in scientific research in the world. That tells me enough of those engineers do stay in Iran.

I don't have time, go search the forum for posts about how starting right from your ministers the maniacs are claiming to have discovered everything from Aeroplanes to micro surgery some 5000 years ago.

Be my guest, enlighten yourself

The graph has a note at the bottom saying that Data for China and India was not available .. and I think it would be safe to assume that both will be at the top by the share magnitude of their population and better than average education systems. Having said that it is interesting to note that Russia has almost twice as many graduates than US .. and Iran is also right there at the top .. hope Pakistan also improves its education and Research culture .. One thing Musharraf did right in his tenure was to form an independent HEC and raise the standard of higher education .. unfortunately successive political govt have all but destroyed HEC also ..
