Now Liberalism is a political philosophy that envisages freedom of speech, freedom to elect representatives, freedom of market and freedom of one's own individuality-which means tolerance of diversity and acceptance of others w/o forcing others to follow your own view on right and wrong and w/o necessarily giving up your own ideals.
In Pakistan, liberalism is defined as anything and absolutely everything that even slightly tips the balance of any argument or situation in the favor of freedom of women. The entire concept of liberalism, in the mind of Pakistani conservatives (read mullahs) revolves around the liberties of man being given to women as well; such as equal work opportunities, equal rights and representation and even right down to a matter as trivial as clothing.
Women who wear pants and shirts and/or women who hold high official positions in companies or in governments are, without second thoughts, labelled sluts, whores, and other vile adjectives w/o the commenter even slightly aware of the name or background or story related to the aforementioned women. As long as they are doing something which women in their minds are not 'supposed' to be doing, such as modelling or singing or acting or heck, even looking good, it is enough for these men to equate them with prostitutes merely because some aspect of these women aroused their hidden perversions; which they have been taught to repress by society because sex is the single most taboo topic and the greatest sin of any Pakistani man. [anyone who has read this far, if you reply to this post, please place a # before your comment, as I am 90% sure that the people who post on PDF never even read on what they're commenting. The title is enough for them to make out the entire reasoning and logic of the article; quite the art, no?]
It scares the conservatives to think that free women would no longer depend on them and they in turn would no longer be able to keep them under their thumb, taught and told by them what to do, where, when, and how, almost like a slave; leading them to fear the aftermath of such a society where women would not be locked up in chains and depend on the men for everything, but instead stand shoulder to shoulder and become friendly rivals.
