Greetings fellow PDF members,

IMO, I think since China still does not have a gigantic deep blue water navy with 10 or so aircraft carrier groups like the US Navy does, I can expect USA to continue to treat China as a weak fragile pushover in her Asian backyard (South China Sea) through the year 2018/2020. Here in America, I definitely do not see a sense of fear of China's naval capabilities. China's PLA navy is still seen as "child level" as compared to the American navy. Definitely most Americans here do not really fear if the PLA navy is capable of invading American shores. We in the US still do not see China as capable of establishing her long-term naval presence and patrols around Guam, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. We all just say, "Meh, whatever." And laugh at loud. Until China reaches the level of naval capability and size that exceeds the USA's, Washington will not really respect China's territorial space on her side of the world. You all should have notice by now how both Japan and the USA do not respect nor fear China's claim over the Diaoyu Islands. The USA will continue to throw its military weight around in China's regional space. Thus, potentially more and more series of US Navy patrols close to Chinese islands post 2015. By now, you all should not be shocked nor surprised by what the US Navy would do, can do, and will do in the South China Sea. China should not be shocked nor surprised by it either. IMO, China will need to match up and build up her PLA naval might as much as she can and as fast as she can in order to induce REAL FEAR and RESPECT from Japan and USA on her side of the world. And that is the bottom line... What are your elaborate thoughts?

Is the U.S. navy 12 miles off Shanghai or is it some reclaimed sandbar in dispute?

You've got yourself so hyped up you're making it sound like the U.S. Navy routinely parks it's ships right off your mainland in a big show. Do you really believe that????

They did park at a port in Hong Kong if I remembered correctly. Including the US aircraft carrier.

This is not about fear or respect Im afraid.. because the truth is they fear the PLAN very much.

This is from last week:

Speaking at a defence forum in Beijing, General Fan Changlong, who is vice-chair of China’s central military commission, pledged that the country would “never recklessly resort to the use of force, even on issues bearing on sovereignty”.

The US has been planing to send patrol ships for months.. but just too timid to put things into action. So it's China who finally lost patience and sent a general to give Pentagon the go-ahead.. Fan Changlong was pretty much saying “What took you so god damn long?Just sent your ship we are not gonna open fire!”

A week later comes the Burke:lol:

South China Sea islands are only for civilian use, says Chinese general

China don't mind USA strutting like a peacock and pointlessly showing off for the sake of insecure regional allies but they haven't done anything substantial or significant to warrant genuine concern from China.

China is building and planning for the long game and they are winning. Slowly but surely...China will prevail in the end.

That's the game China is playing and the US has no answer for it. I have already said so that China isn't driving the US out of Asia or anything. The US will always remain as a Pacific Naval Power due to their presence in Guam and nearby islands. What China is aiming at is our backyard, what can Japan and US possibly do about that?
China is developing a blue water navy and we have plenty of time to modernize our assets. The goal is to protect the sea lanes and having the ability to evacuate our people in times of war such as what happened to Libya. Nobody in the Western world believe in the fairy tale of China is planning to invade and occupy Vietnam or the Philippines. We spend less than 2% in Defence compared to the US it's peanuts. In the long run the US can't sustain their ridiculous astronomical defence budget, it's hurting already as they are cutting expenses. Fact is China is closing the gap at a "rapid" rate (notice the quotes because China is taking the time to develop our assets). If China were to spend 4-5% everybody will crap in their pants.

I'm tired from hearing your bullshit. You repeat over and over again spending only 2 per cent on defence. Who controls it and verifies that you tell the truth?

The NATO?

The rest of your posts is full of contradictions. Between humour and rubbish.

No need to get too upset about this new development. US scored a psychological victory which doesn't mean jack in the long run. The time is on China side. Here is the official statement from China:

"If any country thinks that, through some gimmicks, they will be able to interfere with or even prevent China from engaging in reasonable, legitimate and legal activities in its own territories, I want to suggest those countries give up such fantasy," ministry spokesman Lu Kang said.

"In fact, if relevant parties insist on creating tensions in the region and making trouble out of nothing, it may force China to draw the conclusion that we need to strengthen and hasten the buildup of our relevant capabilities. I advise the U.S. not to create such a self-fulfilling prophecy."

If it what you really think then PLAN patrol at diayutai would have long stop by USN and spratly island construction would have long stop by USN too. But until now, it hasn't. Can you tell me why China construction at Spratly island has not stop yet?

Just because the US doesn't fear China doesn't mean the US views China as a fragile pushover. you are moving between 2 extremes.
