“The Vaddera parents with whom my Mala parents left me when I was five married me off to a Vaddera groom. After I had three kids with him, we separated and eventually got divorced," she said.

That was a very non-empathetic judgement made by this one-man commission who did not have to face social and economic discrimination all his life.

Here is a historical Trivia about this brilliant Historian Dharampal.

In Nov 1962, Dharampal was arrested along with two co signatories (Narendra Dutta and Roop Narayan) for writing a letter to Nehru demanding his resignation , this was circulation of a letter amongst Members of Parliament, after the Indian debacle in our war with China in 1962.

For the crime of Dharampal et al’s questioning the untenable continuance of Nehru as the PM, especially because the latter had not delivered on many things – the trio of Dharampal + Roop Narayan + Narendra Datta were arrested and incarcerated under ‘Defence of India Act!’

Though the immediate context for the circulated letter (dated 21st November, 1962) was the China debacle, Dharampal and Narendra Datta were more bothered about the emergence of personality cult around Nehru and curbing of freedom of expression.

All 3 were later released from jail after few months and on the intervention of Lal Bahadur Shastri who was then the Home Minister and Jay Prakash Narayan.


THIS is the letter that the Historian wrote that made Nehru JAIL him. So much for the famed nehru "tolerance" and "respect for democracy".
