Air strikes kill 61 suspected militants in Orakzai

Thursday, 25 Mar, 2010

The jet fire rained in two spells during the day in the Mamuzai area where many Taliban leaders are believed to have fled.

PARACHINAR: Pakistani military air strikes killed 61 suspected militants in an area near the Afghan border Thursday, including dozens at a seminary where Taliban commanders were believed to be meeting, officials said.

The jet fire rained in two spells during the day in the Mamuzai area of Orakzai, a tribal region where many Taliban leaders are believed to have fled to avoid an army ground offensive further south.

Alongside the religious seminary, a mosque and a school were targeted, local official Samiullah Orakzai said.

Two intelligence officials said the seminary was a main center for Tableeghi Jamaat, a non-violent Islamic missionary group. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters.

The center was targeted because a group of Taliban leaders were believed to be meeting there in the afternoon.

Some four dozen people died in the airstrikes in and around the seminary, while 13 others were killed in morning strikes at the two other sites.

The officials said all 61 were suspected militants. Independent confirmation of the death toll or the victims' identities was nearly impossible because access to the tribal region is restricted.—AP

I am concerned that all the targets may not turn out to be militants.

Hopefully will be clarified in the next few days.

why a tableeghi markaz this time i doubt that this military act wouldn't fire any more
sectarian violence in our country

it does not matter to me if they were tablighis but what is important is what tableegh they were doing and this is why they were doomed.

Lets wait for some details.

If such a large scale strike happened on just one location, it means that there was solid evidence of something happening, as PAF has been very strict and critical about its air strikes and knows what collateral damage will result.

It may be a center for tablighi jamat, but if you know, these Talibans have used schools, peoples homes, basic health units, masjids and other public infrastructure for their meetings and other activities. If you guys remember, in one of a similar attack on a seminary in Orakzai agency a few months back, a very know and notorious commander was killed, whose seminary was used as a butcher shop for butchering any opponent and even military men were slaughtered in there.

As PAF is using UAVs now also, thus i believe it must have been a solid intelligence where human and surveillance both were utilized and thus the blitzkrieg was launched on such large scale.

It is a good way to explain it indeed but we should wait for the details to emerge that we can pinpoint who was the key target !

i was just thinking if key taliban leaders are dead in one of these strikes it would be a big blow to them. anyway good work PAF:pakistan:

I hope that all those deads were millitants and not civilians bcz this will give a negetive impact on the Armed forces and as usual some people will try to use this propaganda for their benefits. This is a very critical situation for Pakistan, we want to clear our territory from these terrorists and we don't want to have collatral damage, but when you use force their is always collatral damage we must try to overcome that damage and repair it. I'm always of thinking that we must consider all the oprions available to us; 1) Dialogue 2) Use of Force. we can use both the options if we want to have longterm peace in this region. we must go on with (politics) dialogue and also continuing conducting oprations against these foreign backed terrorists. U.S. is also trying to have deals with Talibans so we better consider also what's happening in Afghanistan.

Airstrikes kill 66 Taliban in Orakzai Agency

* Dozens injured as jets target Taliban training centre in Mamuzai

By Abdul Saboor Khan

HANGU: Fighter jets bombed Ghaljo and Mamuzai areas, seen as strongholds of the Taliban in Upper Orakzai Agency, on Friday killing 66 terrorists.

Local residents said 48 terrorists were killed when fighter jets targeted a madrassa and training centre being run by Taliban in Mamuzai and Ghaljo areas. Twenty-two terrorists were reported injured in the strike.

Military sources confirmed the raids but gave no casualty figures, saying they were waiting for reports from their sources in the area.

Ten terrorists were killed in clashes with the security forces in Adamkhel Kalay and Mirobak areas in Lower Orakzai while eight others were killed in airstrikes in Dabouri in Upper Orakzai, security officials told Daily Times.

Taliban death toll reached 87 on the third consecutive day. The number of the injured reached 56 while 12 were arrested by the forces, the officials said.

Operation Khwakh Ba De Sham aims to dislodge Taliban from Orakzai where the top leadership and commanders of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan moved last year after Operation Rah-e-Nijat flushed Hakeemullah Mehsud-led Taliban out from their strongholds in South Waziristan.

“We are advancing towards the strongholds of the militants,” the officials said, adding that they were facing resistance.

The US-trained paramilitary Frontier Corps and regular army jawans are taking part in the operation aiming to deny the militants safe-havens in the strategically located Orakzai tribal region providing the Taliban direct access to North Waziristan and Khyber agencies bordering Peshawar.

Meanwhile, two headless bodies of missing tribal elders were found days after they were abducted by suspected Taliban, political administration said. The militants kidnapped six elders and had killed at least three of them.

The TTP have been under pressure in their main stronghold, South Waziristan Agency, since the army launched its ground offensive there in October last year.

Senior military officer among five killed in Orakzai
By Ismail Khan
Friday, 26 Mar, 2010

PESHAWAR, March 26: A senior military officer was among the five security officials killed in clashes with militants in Orakzai tribal region on Friday, a senior security official said.

A lieutenant colonel of the paramilitary Frontier Corps was killed along with four others, when militants launched a counter-attack to wrestle back the control of a key post in the regional headquarters of Kalaya, the official said.

Over a hundred attacked the newly-established post with mortars and automatic machine gun fire in the wee hours, killing five officials and wounding fifteen others, the official said.

The gunfight continued for several hours. Jet fighters later bombed the area and the security official said the post had been retaken. “We have now moved beyond the post”, the official said.

The official said that 27 militants had been killed during the exchange of fire.. “Some of them appear to be Uzbeks”, the official said.

He said that the group of militants appeared to make a grandstand to “fight till the end” after finding it difficult to get away to the neighbouring Terah Valley in Khyber tribal region.

“Looks like these guys were stuck and could not get away like others of their comrades and decided to launch a counter-attack and make a grandstand”, the security official said, requesting he not be named.

The clash occurred on the third day of the military operation in Orakzai, a militant stronghold that also served as a second base to the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan – an umbrella organization of several militant groups operating in the tribal regions.

Targeting tableegi markaz is great mistake , local people have great respect for them , PA/GOP should applogize if it is mistake.

Tableegi jamat have more then 100 million supporters in Pakistan and it has workers and supporters all over the world.

I agree Khan G. It is indeed the matter with PAF they don't drop there bombs somewhere without any concrete and solid evidences. There certainly were intelligence.

I think Orakzai needs to get purified.

Can you show were there tableghi jamat's people in that center ?? Are you sure if they were there, they hadn't been collaborating with the local taliban ?? And in all this war so far, such kind of massive bombing has never taken place on any place especially places of worship until and unless something concrete evidence is not there. And in this incident there seems to be something big happening in that place due to which the strike happened. And i don't believe in such situation any tableghi jamat person would be there as the area is under taliban, most probably, the center was occupied by the taliban and was being used as a base. I hope you remember, how these taliban had occupied the homes of the ousted sikhs from the orakzai agency and used as dumping ground for ammo and their sleeping quarters and then an air strike was launched on them killing many of them.

Anyway, PAF is not stupid to be bombing places of worship as they are themselves Muslim too, but as said before, there was something big happening there.

One thing i like about Pakistan is that it has balls to eliminate the problem it has.Where as in India the government is so concerned about politics it doesn't even allow its Air Force to shoot in self defence.Good going Pakistan keep it up.:cheers:

^^^First thing first. These terrorists are neither Muslims, nor Pakistanis, thats for sure. Anyone who kills an innocent Human Being without any reason in the name of Allah can not be a Muslim. And on their necks there is blood of hundreds of innocents. And even the people who are bound by them forcefully to support them, have raised voice against them. They are not ours, we never claim them and owe them. They are intruders bound to hell.

Secondly, PAF does ops alongside Pakistan Army. When there is need, Pakistan Army operates but in situations when the targets are all hostile (Confirmed by Intel) PAF is used and its not a bad thing, in fact, a positive use of Mutual ops.
