May be the over 40s on this forum remember these events?
In 1979 when USSR attacked Afghanistan on the request of a member of Afghani royal family, the people of Afghanistan stood up against foreign Invaders.
Pakistan helped them by creating "Mujahedeen movement".
The Mujahedeen defeated USSR and the Soviet Union broke apart.
On 14th April 1988 a peace treaty was signed between USSR and Mujahedeen in Geneva. The treaty was brokered by Pakistan and it caused the end of Soviet Afgan war and complete withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan.
In 1991 Soviet Union broke apart because of the financial losses caused by Soviet Afgan war.
After Soviet withdrawal from USSR in 1988 the Mujahedeen took sides with different warlords and Afghani started fighting each other for government.
The Afghan civil war raged on until 1995.
It was bloodier than Afghani Soviet war and Afgans used all the leftover weapons from Soviet military, on each others.
In 1994 An Afghani war lord openly married a boy and the news reached Pakistani madressahs and Taliban movement started.
By 1995 the hundreds of thousands of Afghani war orphans living and learning in Pakistani Madressahs ,and living a peaceful life, had enough and they wanted to do something to bring peace to their country.
The Afghan war orphans were outraged by the bloodshed of Afghani by the hands of Afghani and the non Islamic acts of warlords , and started moving back to Afghanistan in larger numbers.
In 1995 they brought peace to Afghanistan for the first time in 16 years.
Pedophilic war lords were got rid of and Islamic government introduced.
Taliban government opened embassies all over the world, including USA.
Many Arabs and other Muslims immigrated to Afghanistan to live under world's only Islamic government.
In September 2001 world trade center was attacked in New York.
The event was named 9/11.
US government blamed responsibility on some Arabs living in Afghanistan, specially a Saudi citizen Osama bin Laden.
US asked Taliban government on diplomatic and state level to handover Osama bin Laden as he was officially living in Afghanistan.
Pakistan also request Taliban government to comply with international demands .
9/11 caused too much anger in USA against Taliban government and handing over one man could have avoided an all-out attack from USA, for which US government and military were under pressure from people.
Taliban refused to handover Osama bin Laden.
Pakistan saw no further benefits in working with a government who knows no diplomacy.
Pakistan allowed US military to use Pakistani airspace and ports for military operations in Afghanistan.
Same as Pakistan allows all Afghani trade to pass through Pakistan.
Afghanistan being a landlocked country, anyone trying to reach Afghanistan has to use Pakistani territory as being the shortest way.
Pakistan couldn't and still cannot play guardians of Afghanistan.
Afghanistan's own disgruntled Shia and ethnic non pushtoon warlord backed US invasion and a pro US Afghani military organization "Northern alliance" was formed.
USA only invaded Taliban government from air and ground assault was launched by Afghanistans own people the Northern alliance.
On 13th of November 2001 , the northern alliance entered Kabul and ousted Taliban government.
Despite tall claims the Taliban government could only face American air assault and Afghani northern alliance ground offensive for only 28 days.
On 14th of November 2001 Taliban ran to the hills.
They are still there today.
