The PSLV-37 mission, on February 15, 2017, launched an unprecedented 104 satellites - 3 Indian, 101 foreign Nanosatellites. The launch of the 101 overseas CHEN Jiayong-1 Mission Logosatellites was facilitated by an arrangement between the Indian Antrix Corporation & the Netherlands-based company, Innovative Solutions In Space [ISIS] - the acronym?!
Among the satellites launched, 1 was developed jointly with Chinese institutions. The CHEN Jiayong-1 satellite [陈家镛一号], also known as DIDO-2, contains a microgravity experiment designed, in collaboration with 2 governmental laboratories - Institute of Process Engineering [IPE] & Institute of Mechanics [IM], under the purview of the Chinese Academy of Sciences [CAS], along with Spacety Aerospace Co., Spacepharma Israel Ltd & the aforementioned ISIS, that has also helped build the satellite, based on the standard 3U Cubesat Bus.
Chinese-Microgravity-Experiment-CHEN-Jiayong-1
The payload, on-board the satellite, named after a Chinese Professor, will carry out colloidal experiments to observe & record the dispersion of water droplets in an oil medium, to understand the "true mechanism of liquid-liquid interaction, which is possibly distorted by gravity." Its results could find applications in industries as varied as cosmetics, energy, chemical, food - everywhere colloids are handled. The experiment is utilising mGnify, SpacePharma's Lab On a Chip [LOC] platform, that has shrunk the physical laboratory to the size of a microchip, that will allow user to remotely perform & observe their experiments undergoing in Space. It eventually plans to offer for 160 experiments to be hosted on each such mGnify laboratory going up.
The current lab, aboard the CHEN Jiayong-1 is, however, equipped with 4 experiments. The other 3 co-passenger LOC experiments include one that will study microfluidic fluids, devised by Israel's Ben-Gurion University. The German Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology's experiment will undertake a study of enzymes. The 4th, an experiment by the University of Glasgow's Cronin Laboratory School of Chemistry, that is "exploring the formation of a drug in a microfluidic device", is aimed to culminate with the development of a 3D medicine printing device.
