RIP - Thailand is one of my favourite countries. It is deplorable that this peaceful country is affected by terrorism.

.
Background: Malay Muslims in the south were forcibly annexed by the north and have been fighting for independence. Unfortunately, since the international community ignores their plight, they turn to ever more violent means. It is always the ordinary people in the middle who end up suffering either way.

The only equitable solution is for the international community to help the south get independence, like they did with Christian South Sudan and Christian East Timor.

RIP to the dead.

However, if all minority or religious groups want independents and are granted, we are setting precedents for chaos. What next then?

Can one imaging Singapore, a small city state, herself divides into 12 countries based on ethnic, religion and language differences. What next again then?

Depends on the history.

If the area used to be independent and was forcibly annexed, and the vast majority of the population supports independence, only then it becomes an issue. If it's only a minority of (foreign funded) troublemakers, then there is no cause. Unfortunately, when legitimate concerns are ignored, then terrorists take over the debate and the situation spirals downward.

Seriously I would like to understand what is the legitimate concern here. Please enlighten me.

The Malay regions were under constant occupation from one invader or another. The current setup dates back to the Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia when the British and the Siamese decided to divide up the spoils.

The complaint from the south is that a) they were never consulted about this treaty, and b) their language, culture and religion are being systematically eroded by the authoritarian north. There are also issues of ethnic discrimination against the Malays by the dominant Siamese. Like I wrote, if these concerns were properly addressed, most Malays would probably opt for remaining in Thailand but, given the brutal heavy handedness of the Siamese response, the terrorists co-opt the cause.

Thanks Mate - I do not know what is happening there - I will defer myself from commenting further.
