Dhaka, Sept 11 (UNB) – The Thai government is interested to take some one lakh workers from Bangladesh, said officials at the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment (MEWOE) on Tuesday.

MEWOE secretary Dr Zafar Ahmed Khan told UNB that a high-level delegation will visit Thailand very soon to discuss the migration of workers to that country.

“Thailand is interested to take more than one lakh Bangladeshi workers to employ them in various professions, including agriculture, construction and plantation. They’ll also take about 1,000 fishermen from the country,” he said.

“Earlier”, he said, “The Thai government, through its embassy in Dhaka, formally requested us to send an envoy to that country to discuss the issue.”

“Director general of the Bangladesh Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training (BMET) Shamsun Nahar along with a joint-secretary of the ministry will visit Thailand very soon as part of the delegation,” Zafar said.

He also pointed out that Bangladesh has already sent a proposal to the Thai government for signing a Memorandum of Understanding in this regard.

“I hope our delegation will finalise the number of workers to be sent there sector-wise after discussions with their Thai counterpart,” he added.

The secretary also noted that he and the MEWOE minister, during a visit to the Philippines, in May this year sat with a delegation of the Thai government on April 13 and proposed them to take workers from the country.

MEBT director general Shamsun Nahar said, “The Thai government has not yet spoken to us about the process of the workers’ migration. But we’re going to visit Thailand very soon to discuss the signing of the MoU.”
