An aircraft of Royal Thai Air Force carrying 15 crew members skidded off the runway into a ditch at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Monday morning, injuring at least three.

Confirming the incident, airport’s control-tower officials said they gave the pilot necessary instructions during landing but, at one stage, the plane skidded off the runway.

The injured were given first aid after a team from Shahjalal Airport rescued them just after the plane crash.

Later, the airport authorities handed over the crew to the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (Caab).

The ATR-72 aircraft from Bangkok touched down at the Dhaka airport at 8:51am. Primary apprehension is that the pilot lost control because of a crosswind, said airport sources concerned.

“The aircraft has been damaged badly...It will not be possible to fly the aircraft again as about 80 percent of it got damaged completely,” a high official at the airport said.

Eight of the 15 crewmen are Thai Air Force pilots who came to Bangladesh on a “cross-country” mission, said the official, preferring anonymity.

The crew was supposed to spend 30 April in Bangladesh and leave the country for Delhi on 1 May, he added.

A CAAB team is investigating the aircraft while a Thai Air Force team is scheduled to arrive today, said a CAAB official.

The Thai ambassador reached the airport within a few hours of the incident and took the crew to the embassy.

“We will send the crew to Thailand after completing the investigation,” said the CAAB official.
