Tesla sold 10,160 vehicles in China in March, its highest ever monthly sales in the world's largest auto market, the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) said on Thursday.

Tesla, which aims to produce 150,000 Model 3 sedans from its $2 billion Shanghai factory, sold around 30% of the battery electric vehicles sold in China, Cui Dongshu, CPCA secretary general, said on an online briefing.

Tesla sold around 3,900 units in February, up from 2,620 vehicles in January, CPCA data showed. CPCA uses a different counting method than Tesla's deliveries.

Overall passenger car sales in March were down 40.8% from a year earlier.

Tesla sales in China hit record high during the pandemic, represent 25% of country’s EV sales

Tesla’s sales in China hit a record high in March despite the coronavirus pandemic, and it represented 25% of the country’s electric vehicle sales during the period.

Last week, Tesla announced it delivered over 88,000 cars in Q1 2020 — resulting in its “best first quarter ever” and beating delivery expectations.

With the coronavirus shutting down the economy in many countries, analysts were surprised by the results.

We already knew that Tesla delivered 3,563 and 3,900 cars in January and February in China, but the March numbers are apparently the ones that made the difference.

The China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) announced today that Tesla delivered 10,160 vehicles in China in March, the automaker’s best results in a single month ever.

Tesla managed the result in a month when the overall passenger car sales in China, which is the biggest auto market in the world, were down more than 40%.

In order to keep its deliveries going, the company has ramped its home delivery service, which enables customers to take delivery of their new car while limiting their travels.

Furthermore, Tesla has also started offering “contactless test drives.” It consists of giving customers access to test drive vehicles by scheduling an appointment online or by phone and having the vehicle unlocked through Tesla’s mobile app.

That way, they never have to be in direct contact with Tesla’s salespeople. Tesla even provides in-car video instructions on the center screen.

They produced a commercial about the entire experience to let people know about the new “contactless test drive” service.

CPCA believes that the auto market will start growing back in April as the country starts to recover from the pandemic and lifts more restrictions.

With Gigafactory Shanghai now reportedly capable of producing 3,000 Model 3 vehicles per week, Tesla is doubling down its effort in the Chinese market.

. . .

This is not a useful statistic. It is from 2019.

By the way, China made a mistake in getting Tesla into China at this time.

China's EV upstarts such as NIO, Xpeng, etc. are dynamic and aggressive. They have a real chance to compete with the likes of BMW, Toyota, Ford, etc. But they have no chance to compete with Tesla.

I don't think any company can compete with Tesla.

China shall wait another year to allow China's EV new upstarts to get stronger before allowing Tesla in.

I believe we are a free trade country, let them come in. Why do you think China let MNCs earn money in China, we tie down these MNCs to our economy. The lobbyist just asked Trump to tone down, look at tht puppet now.

Thats true, Xi even tries his best to boost Telsa sale by restricting the number of petrol cars sold each year. Xi just tries to make US investors believe that they still can make money well in CN, so US investors will pressure Trump to ease the trade war.

But Trump and Wall st tycoons think that making CN collapse, set up a puppet rebell regime and sell $ trillion in weapons to those rebels is much better way to "Make US great again"

Telsa forsaw ?? Dude, Elon Musk a a dumbazz, his cars make so many accident on road and Telsa was almost bankrupted in US.

But Telsa car accident is not a big problem in CN, Musk doesnt get heavy fined when his cars crashed on CN road plus Xi want to use Telsa to prove that US invetors still make good money in CN, thats why Telsa car survive in CN.

Without Xi's favor to Telsa ( restricted petrol car sale, low fine when Telsa car make accident, help building a giga factories etc) then Elon Musk woukd bankrupted and live wt the rest of his life in US prison now.

I think restrictions on petrol cars happened long before Tesla. It was due to new energy policies, the plan is to use Tesla to export to other markets, they produce Teslas 30-40% cheaper in China.

Well anybody can hope China collapses, but what did we learn from this current virus crisis? Lol
