NIO is seeing a sharp drop in sales in China as sales of Tesla Model Y began in January at highly competitive prices. The California-based manufacturer, which has a plant in Shanghai, continues to command much of the local attention in China with its very popular new crossover model.

NIO reported it delivered 5,578 units in February in China, down from 7,225 units in January. This reflects a 22.8% decline--and a direct reaction to the Giga Shanghai-made Model Y market entry. At the beginning of the year, Tesla slashed the price of its SUV by 30 percent on its website, spurring an explosion in demand. Tesla Model Y Long Range costs RMB 339,000, while NIO's EC6 starts from RMB 368,000.

“Tesla offered a sharp price cut in their Model Y and created strong demand,” NIO founder William Li said at the Earnings Call. The automaker reported losses of RMB 1.39 billion ($212.8 million) in Q4 2020.

On January 1, Tesla began selling its domestic-made Model Y compact SUV at a price significantly lower than what it offered customers last June during pre-order. Thus, already by January, Tesla had sold 1,641 Model Ys. The number of sales for February should be released later this month. Tesla delivered 13,843 Model 3 sedans in January, according to the China Passenger Car Association.

“The market will see cutthroat competition in the premium EV segment as all carmakers including established brands and start-ups are aware of the huge potential and will try to lure more wealthy Chinese drivers through new model launches and promotional campaigns,” said Tian Maowei, a sales manager at Yiyou Auto Service in Shanghai. “Tesla still enjoys the advantage in branding awareness, and Chinese start-ups and conventional carmakers such as Volkswagen will play a catch-up game,” he added.

even in USA, I donot think Rivian,Lucid,Faraday or Nikola (Fraud company) can match Tesla..only the Volkswagen group may be able to stop Tesla

Lol.. another fantastic fabrication by tesla...

Nio is a dead end company. Can’t scale, and their battery swap technology makes no sense. They MIGHT prove to be successful, but they’ll forever be in Tesla’s shadow.

Tesla is going to a valuation of 100b $ company which is the "real" value of it as a technology company.

NIO was a similar bubble to Tesla and still is. Its valuation is absurd. Nothing surprising in it, it is listed on the bubble American stock.

BTW. looking at February sales is not very good. It was a CNY holiday.

Care to make a bet? When Tesla hits a $1 trillion valuation, you are banned from the forum. If Tesla drops to a $100 billion valuation, I am banned from the forum. Deal?

That is what competition is all about.
The only problem in here is Nio is not Tesla only competitor in China. There are many others.

Actually, Lucid has a very solid chance of matching Tesla imo. Not necessarily 1 for 1 but it will be the largest automaker threat to Tesla besides Nio and Volkswagen. The Lucid Air makes the top of the line Model S look like a honda accord lmao.
Volkswagen has a reputation for being junk in the US. They will have to use Audi instead to get US marketshare.
Volkswagen owns a bunch of other brands too. That collectively makes them the most formidable European threat to Tesla.

LOL, the pathetic US stock market is now solely tied with the sales number of Tesla's always price-cutting cars in China.

The 18% increase of sales in Feb is an accident, since it is the Chinese New years month, many numbers are distorted due to different holiday policy among companies.

The other reason is the very aggressive price-cutting of cars of Tesla in China, actually none of its Chinese competitors following Tesla's price-cutting.

The reason of Tesla's aggressive price-cutting in China is because Telsa has signed a betting deal with the investors: They need to achieve the sales number in China at whatever costs it takes otherwise they will have to return the investment with interests at the end of the contract.

Lets waitting for March's number, when all of their competitors come back from the holiday month and when the one-time price-cutting effect of Model Y cools off, well, maybe Tesla can further cut their price every month to boost their sales number, eventually it can priced as much as the piece of crap it worths.

The excuses rolling in already? March will be even stronger for Tesla due to further Model Y ramp and end of quarter deliveries.

Classic Volkswagen silliness

Battery swapping is just open to abuse (ie people swapping in a few knockoff batteries in the pack before a swap.)
