WASHINGTON: This wasn't how it was meant to turn out. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the ritzy Silicon Valley electric carmaker Tesla hasn't exactly ignited the company's interest in India. Instead, the firm's honcho Elon Musk has disclosed that he is in talks with China to produce vehicles there and an announcement in this regard can be expected soon.

Although Modi's Tesla sortie during his visit to the Bay Area in September was primarily focused on the company's powerwall battery packs with an eye towards procuring off-grid electric power technology for India, the fundamentals arise from Tesla's work on its highly-rated electric cars. Tesla's Model S luxury sedan, priced at $70,000 and above, is what is being lined up for production in China, possibly within three years, according to accounts in the Chinese media.

Musk reportedly reckons that production costs could be cut by a third by manufacturing in China. China is now the world's largest car market, with nearly 20 million cars sold last year, and demand for electric cars is expected to skyrocket considering the huge amounts of vehicular pollution that has put the country in the spotlight in the global warming debate.

Local production would give Tesla a head start. The company opened a showroom in Beijing in November 2013.

India faces a similar, and possibly worse pollution problem than China, but the country's tough political and regulatory environment has evidently driven away any interest Tesla might have entertained. Although the company employs a large number of engineers of Indian-origin, it is yet to find India interesting from the manufacturing perspective'' and the government's "Make in India'' campaign does not seem to have caught its imagination.

Even before the Modi trip, sources who scoped Tesla preparatory to the Prime Minister's visit told this correspondent the company was not really hot on manufacturing in India, although it was honored by the Indian leader's visit and interest. The company is named after the inventor Nikola Tesla, who, quite remarkably, is said to have engaged with Modi's own hero, Swami Vivekananda, during his visit to the US in 1893.

Almost all of Tesla's current production is centred in California, and it recently opened an assembly unit in Tilburg, Netherlands.

India need to be realistic. China is already at another level. While India need to start from bottom like making cheap toy, plastic and fabric. By thinking you skip the basic or bottom part show how unrealistic Indian mentality. :D
To be honest, they haven't really get into intensive industrial stage and their country is already polluted with trash and hygiene problem. I can only imagine the horror they will face if they start to industrialize with so many undisciplined people and a very tight pack landmass . It is also worth mentioning India chance of industrialize is slim because Carbon Emission deal.

China starts building its largest electric car solar charging complex

Beijing has started construction of the country's largest solar charging station, capable of charging 80 electric cars per day.

The official Xinhua agency said (link in Chinese) Beijing has put 15 million yuan (US$2.36 million) toward building the complex, which is expected to be operational by the end of the year.

It will have 30 fast-charge points, capable of charging a car to full power within 40 minutes, and 20 slow-charge points that will charge a car in two hours.

The complex, located at Shijingshan District, is a joint venture between Shougang Corporation, one of China's largest steel companies, and Tellus Power, which manufactures electric vehicle charging stations.

However, with inconsistent standards for electric vehicles, not every make is compatible with the new stations. Reports say only cars from Chinese makers and the two domestic joint ventures with Japanese and European makers qualify.

As with the cars supported in the recent Shanghai-Beijing project, we expect these refer to cars from Chinese makers BAIC Motor and BYD; German firm Daimler and BYD's joint venture, Denza; and those from Japan's Nissan and China's Dongfeng joint venture.

The Shanghai-Beijing project was completed in January this year, which saw China line the 1,260 km (783 mile) route between Beijing and Shanghai with 50 fast-charging stations.

Support for domestic vehicles leaves companies like Tesla out of the picture.

Tesla chief Elon Musk said in April 2014 at the start of Tesla shipping its cars to China that he was bullish about the market there, and had partnered with Chinese power company Hanenergy to start building supercharger stations in Beijing and Shanghai.

But by January this year Musk admitted that sales were not as great as he had hoped. One of those problems was charging compatibility — Tesla requires car owners to install Tesla's charging units, and some properties don't allow people to install these, forcing some to cancel their Tesla orders.

German maker BMW also started building electric stations in Shanghai last year, to accommodate its electric cars in the country.

China has made large investments in solar power and electric vehicles, as it tries to combat emissions on the road and its heavy reliance on coal-based power.

In July, it started constructing its largest solar power plant in the Gobi desertacross 6,301 acres, capable of supplying power to 1 million households.

BYD Plug-In Electric Car Sales Up In China To Over 5,500 In September

BYD plug-in electric car sales in China – September 2015

BYD Tang

September was another month of growing plug-in electric car sales for BYD.

A total of 5,749 were delivered (compared to 1,895 one year ago), as the plug-in hybrid Tang SUV overtook Qin in the rankings.

BYD Tang set a new record of 3,044 sales, while Qin again moved back to 2,115.

Whether consumers prefer Tang over Qin, or if BYD needed to switch to more battery output for the Tang is the open question. Prior to the Tang launch, Qin was growing every month. In September, the company used at least 110 MWh (new record for car division).

There were also 465 all-electric BYD e6 sales last month and 125 of all-new all-electric e5.

BYD Song

BYD Song, which we hoped for, turns out to be a gasoline model at the moment. Plug-in version of Song will be launched in the first quarter of 2016.

35 Songs were sold in August and 1,113 in September, but all were ICE (The first 1,000 Song in pre-sale disappeared in about one hour, according to BYD). Gasoline Songs range in price from $15,300 to $23,200, while the PHEV will cost $44,200.

“Similarly to the PHEV Tang, launched by BYD in June 2015, the PHEV version of the Song will be the second hybrid to rely on the BYD “542” strategy for PHEVs that define the company’s technological proposition, and will feature in all of its future PHEV models, in which “5” means the vehicle’s power to reach 100km/h within 5 seconds, “4” meaning all-time electric four-wheel drive, and “2” for its fuel efficiency of 100km with less than 2 liters of gasoline. Most importantly, and just like the Tang, the Song is equipped with VTOL (vehicle to load) capacity, which literally turns the vehicle into a mobile energy storage station, which enables the car to provide electricity to household applications like microwave ovens, electric stoves, refrigerators, cellphones and laptops. The VTOL technology is BYD’s initiative and is also very useful when one wants to cook a meal outdoors. “

tesla should be welcome in china. china will be the number 1 playground for the e-car builders all over the world. at the same time, it is also a great opportunity for china's e-car industry to lead the world in e-car technologies and applications, just like china is now playing a leading role in the world on all sections of clean energy. think about one day china cuts her annual oil and coal consumptions to 1/10 of today's volume....

The talks with China were on even before Modi met Tesla leadership. Modi met him for pitching India as a destination for making cars. Such decisions dont happen overnight and India is not looking to produce luxury cars but basic versions that commoners can use. Until Tesla have such an offering, it is too early to say if Modi's pitch fizzled out or is actively being considered. Another area of interest to India is captive power plants and storage. Tesla has already opened up many patents that they have in this area for public consumption at zero cost. Let us see how things pan out.

You need to be realistic too. 2nd highest GDP and you are still considered one step above a 3rd world country. You have not yet achieved ' developed' world status. All that money is going to only 40% of the country.

Your China with its 2nd highest GDP is still not given a developed status. It is considered one step above 3rd world country. The amount of crapping your people do in trains, streets in many countries. I would be wary of pointing fingers. Speaking of undisciplined, your government had send you a manual on how to behave in other countries. The Chinese Americans are low rate contributors to our GDP.

Looks like Indian American is angry that motherland India can't make them proud in world.

Why Tesla did not heed Modi ' Made in India' call? Becos India is too advance for 2nd rated Tesla product call, right?
