Terror threat: Interpol issues global security alert

NEW DELHI: Concerned over the series of prison escapes across Pakistan, Libya and Iraq over the past month, Interpol on Saturday issued a global security alert advising its 190 member countries to step up vigilance.

Indicating that many of these jailbreaks - reported from as many as nine member countries - may have been orchestrated by the al Qaeda to free hundreds of terrorists and criminals, the Interpol headquarters in Lyon sought the help of all its member countries to verify if these prison escapes were "coordinated or linked".

Pakistan was witness to a massive jailbreak at its century-old prison in Dera Ismail Khan, during which a squad of highly-trained Taliban fighters bombarded the facility, setting free around 250 prisoners, including nearly three dozen mid-level Taliban cadres.

"Interpol is asking its member countries to closely follow and swiftly process any information linked to these events and the escaped prisoners. They are also requested to alert the relevant member country and Interpol general secretariat headquarters if any escaped terrorist is located or intelligence developed which could help prevent another terrorist attack," the global police agency said in the worldwide alert uploaded on its website. This comes even as Interpol's 24-hour command and coordination centre and other specialized units prioritise information and intelligence concerning the breakouts or terror plots, so as to immediately alert relevant member countries of any updates.

The Interpol alert underlined how August has been the month of many violent terror strikes, including the August 25, 2003 blasts at Gateway of India and Zaveri Bazaar in Mumbai, the Gluboky attack in Russia and 2003 bombings at Jakarta's Marriott Hotel. Besides, it added, the coming week marks the 15th anniversary of the US Embassy bombings in Nairobi, Kenya and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in which more than 200 people, mostly Africans, were killed and 4,000 others injured.

Alerting the embassies in particular, the alert pointed out how "in recent years, terrorist attacks focusing on diplomatic facilities in Afghanistan, Greece, India, Kenya, Libya, Pakistan, Peru, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tanzania, Turkey and Yemen have also resulted in hundreds of casualties of all nationalities".

A couple of days ago, the US State Department had issued a global travel alert in response to credible intelligence suggesting that Al-Qaeda and affiliated organizations were planning terrorist attacks until August 31, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa. The US authorities have also announced a one-day closure of more than 20 diplomatic missions on August 4, and the UK Foreign Office has confirmed the closure of the British embassy in Yemen on August 4 and 5.
