The head of the women’s professional tennis tour announced that all WTA tournaments would be suspended in China because of concerns about the safety of Peng Shuai, a Grand Slam doubles champion who accused a former high-ranking government official in that country of sexual assault.

Peng dropped out of public view after raising the allegations about former vice premier Zhang Gaoli in a November 2 social media posting that was quickly taken down by Chinese authorities.

“Unfortunately, the leadership in China has not addressed this very serious issue in any credible way,” WTA Chairman and CEO Steve Simon wrote in a statement distributed by the tour.

“While we now know where Peng is, I have serious doubts that she is free, safe, and not subject to censorship, coercion, and intimidation.”

Simon repeated his call for a “full and transparent investigation — without censorship” into Peng's accusations and took an unusually strong stand against China, which was supposed to be the site of several tennis tournaments next year, including the prestigious season-ending WTA Finals.

“In good conscience, I don’t see how I can ask our athletes to compete there when Peng Shuai is not allowed to communicate freely and has seemingly been pressured to contradict her allegation of sexual assault,” Simon said.

“Given the current state of affairs, I am also greatly concerned about the risks that all of our players and staff could face if we were to hold events in China in 2022.”

Beijing is set to host the Winter Olympics beginning on February 4, and International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said late last month he spoke with Peng on a video call.

The IOC did not release video or a transcript of the exchange and said only that Bach reported she said she was well.

The IOC said in a statement that Peng appeared to be “doing fine” and said she had requested privacy.

The IOC did not explain how the call was arranged, although it has worked closely with the Chinese Olympic Committee and government officials to organise the upcoming Olympics.

Critics have suggested that Peng would not have called the IOC if she was truly free to speak.

“If powerful people can suppress the voices of women and sweep allegations of sexual assault under the rug, then the basis on which the WTA was founded — equality for women — would suffer an immense setback,” Simon said.

“I will not and cannot let that happen to the WTA and its players.”

China and Russia are both 2 evils of the same coin and should be punished like this

both kill journalists in very brutal ways and apparently both claim to be superpowers and yet are afraid of painters and decorator's, writers and artists

and now it seems female tennis players too

The CCP a bunch of fools and gangsters and condoning rape and sexual assault.

‘No choice’: WTA suspends tennis tournaments in China amid concern for Peng Shuai

The Women’s Tennis Association has announced all events in China and Hong Kong will be suspended immediately amid concern for Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai after she accused a former politician of sexual assault.

WTA chairman Steve Simon said the decision was made on Thursday after repeated attempts to contact the former world No.1 doubles player.

Very ballsy move by WTA with plenty of financial ramifications.
Maybe the sponsors will force to undo the decision, but a brave decision nevertheless. (As political as it may be)

Was surprised the WTA actually stood up to the CCP, awesome move, hope more countries join in and boycott the Winter games.

Looks like all the Chinese propaganda is starting to fail. Because as well all know the CCP is so wonderful, lots of unicorns and rainbows nothing bad ever happens in the China.

China is not a large chunk of their revenue, if they were in NBA's position, then we could pontificate on their courage or lack thereof...

News from 2 July 2021, only Shenzhen remain,

The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) has cancelled tournaments in China and Japan due to COVID-19 concerns and travel restrictions.
Only the WTA Finals in Shenzhen in China will remain on the calendar from the two countries and the status of the competition is still under discussion.

And then news from 13 Sept 2021, Shenzhen also moved to another place,

The WTA events in China is already suspended. Probably because China would not budge on COVID measure.

The suspension is just the usual grandstanding from the west.

.
Other than the fact Peng Shuai didn't make any sexual assault allegation.
Such fake news over boycott that mean nothing in reality.
A slimy white guy making off by playing saint ,clearly he's collaborating against china by ignoring shuai and making fake shit up about her post .

.
Indians are ecstatic... Let's move all WTA games to India. Safe for women (e.g., COVID and sexual assault).

They must be angry that they are barred.

Yes, I think he is mad at China prior to Peng Shuai. Because he is acting really strangely.

Peng Shuai send him email on the 17th asking for privacy and copy to 4 other people in WTA that she usually has contact with (one named Flora), since Peng is an active member of WTA. And this Steve Simon said he tried repeatedly to contact her and receive no reply. That is obviously a lie.

Talk only, nothing will happened while the western bootlickers will only cheer but lack any bite!

Once out of the China market, it will be permanent.

China can apply third party sanctions to WTA sponsors too. Any company that is a sponsor of the WTA will be banned from doing business with China. Choose the WTA or the China market. You will see a mass exodus of the companies sponsoring the WTA. The money for the WTA will dry up.

China can cause major problems for the WTA.
