Indian Air Force Jets Slated to Have Beyond-Visual-Range Strike Capacity by 2018

India’s Tejas light combat aircraft is armed and ready with I-Derby missiles for downing other aircraft, according to The Diplomat.

The missiles have been integrated into the plane’s weapons suite but have yet to finish testing, which is slated to happen by year’s end, Flight Global reported. The Indian Air Force conducted tests in May “to assess the Derby integration with aircraft systems on board Tejas, including the aircraft avionics, fire-controlled radar, launchers and missile weapon delivery system and to verify its performance,” a Ministry of Defense spokesman said.

Beyond-visual-range (BVR) strike capability is crucial for 21st century air combat, according to military analysts. “Modern air combat is divided into beyond visual beyond-visual-range combat and within-visual-range combat. BVR combat means the fighters use airborne detection equipment to search the enemy target, then use [a] remote air-to-air missile to attack it, when both of them are beyond visual range,” a 2011 Beijing University study on BVR strategy reads.

The I-Derby missiles are made by Israel-based Rafael and have a 50 kilometer range.

We need a very good engine , once that is in place it will make a very potent low cost platform.

.
If you look closely at the HAL Tejas, it is actually built using scraps from the Dassault Mirage III that first flown in 1956.

The rest of the $ went to paying for modi's secret villa with the dalai lama in the himalaya

Stop trolling in every thread in Indian defence section without any provocation and with baseless comments.

you must be a most stupidest person on planet... Apart from both being a delta wing design what's the same... First see the design of Air intake!!!

canard delta wing is always better.

u all copied the wrong design and instead of punishing the design, u all gave the designer 1 billion dollars to manufacture the plane in droves.

isn the tejas same design with the mirage 3 (1956)?

prove me wrong?

Visible differences.air intakes are completely different for example.
Tejas is shorter, lighter and with much lesser rcs, composite airframe as well.
Tejas design has several influences - Mirage 3,Mirage 2000 and Saab viggen. But is not directly derived from any one.It has lesser operational range(current version) and is an affordable point defence aircraft for the most part.

There is nothing t0 prove to a dumb troll. Before trolling, look at the design of Dassault Mirage III E, it is a delta wing design. Which is a normal aircraft design. There is not Just D-Mirage 3E

This is avro Vulkan, British made bomber, do you think they copied from French?

Meanwhile Tejas is a double delta wing design.

All the three has a different design but same pattern followed it is a delta wing design.
You may be thinking to design fighter jets like this,

Go somewhere else to troll. Try not to be an oxymoron next time.

@AUSTERLITZ He compares based on the position of engines, general 'look' of the vertical stabilizer and wing. Don't deserve your time.

Yes canards offer better maneuverability and stability at the expense of RCS. Tejas has modern FBW system for stability, and is a relatively light fighter without heavy loads.RCS is very important for the tejas for aerial ambushes .For dogfighting the advent of high off boresight WVRs and IRST have reduced need for high AoA unless using thrust vector which would be too costly for this plane.

So how does tejas compare to eurofighter and rafale?

It is not in their class, nor is it meant to.It is meant to fill squadron strength at cheap prices, take on mass produced pakistani jf-17s and with awacs support , from mk1a models with BVRs and AESA to take on enemy 4rth generation aircraft like j-10 in a defensive role over our own territory. Its not an offensive fighter in the sense it will go into enemy airspace often. Its an air defence fighter that can tackle non-5th gen/non -rafale/eurofighter/su-35 level threats over our own territory cheaply. It is supposed to operate in mixed teams led by rafales and su-30mkis and guided by AWACS to ambush enemies due to its small size and BVR capability.Once it gets its AESA radar it will gain much more independent operating capability, but still in a defensive role mostly.
