PESHAWAR: A teacher in Mingora accidentally, northeast of Peshawar shot dead a 12-year-old pupil on Thursday while cleaning his pistol in the staff room, police said.

Teachers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province were given permission to carry firearms in the classroom after Taliban militants massacred 132 students at a school in the city of Peshawar in December.

“Majid Khan, a teacher at the private Sangota Model School was cleaning his pistol in the staff room when it fired a bullet by accident, hitting a student passing through the corridor,” local police official Fazl Rabi told AFP.

He said the student died on the spot.

Saleem Khan Marwat, the area police chief, confirmed the incident and said the teacher had been arrested.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province allowed teachers to carry guns — and began giving them firearms training — in January, saying it could not provide police guards for every school.

The move was part of efforts to beef up school security after the Peshawar massacre, the deadliest terror attack in Pakistani history.

Heavily armed militants went from room to room at an army-linked school, eventually gunning down a total of 150 people.

But teachers’ associations objected to arming staff, saying it was not their job to fight off militants. -AFP

Very unfortunate incident. But it raises the question of whether schoolteachers should be armed. Would it help, in case of a terrorist attack? The attackers would presumably be a lot more trained in the use of arms than the teachers. Can schoolteachers shoot down trained terrorists? Remember, it was the PA special forces that was called in to kill the terrorists in APS.

I have been against arming teachers from day. Do you know how hard it is to teach police officers good weapon control and nsp's let alone poor teachers who are already stressed out as it is.

Hi,

It is the moral obligation of the teachers to arm themselves----. Here in the U S Christian teachers are arming themselves to protect their Christian and muslim and hindu and jewish students in America---and the great muslim warrior / teacher is chickened out to protect the children.

The firing of the bullet was intentional----he was showing off his handgun to others---he did not take the proper caution to empty the weapon----.

Cleaning the handgun does not fire the bullet----something else fires the bullet----.

A bad choice of pulling his LOADED gun out---and a worst choice of keeping a bullet in the chamber----. Accidents happen when there is a bullet in the chamber and you need to unload it and extract it----not when you are cleaning the gun.

This was a loaded and cocked handgun that was also pointing in the wrong direction----incompetence and callousness took the life of the student.

RIP.......Though it may be a rare incident, but very unfortunate......It should not be the job or the teachers to protect the children....probably every school can hire one or 2 dedicated armed security personal to do that job...... wonder why was he cleaning the weapon in school.... .Have heard several incidents of firing accidentally while cleaning the weapon.....

Teacher was obviously idiot and didn't know what the hell he was doing... But really security guards should be hired... But not those fat Punjab police types

Whatever you wrote as obvious like empty the chamber, unload the gun etc. etc.

These things are obvious for security personals, not for teachers. I am strongly against arming teachers or civilians to fight against terrorists. This is the task of security forces, not the teachers.

Hi,

It is not a rare accident-----he was not cleaning his handgun----it was loaded---why I say that----because it has happened to me three times-----.

Read it clearly guys---read it

First time---it was my father----it was with a single shot shotgun----the game flew away---my father is uncoking the hammer---the thumb slips the hammer---the cartridge fires----the barrel was pointed towards a brick wall---the chips flew and hit me in the eye---I cried and screamed and hollered but no damage done----I was 8 or 9---I gave my Dad a good piece of my mind---created a drama for awhile that my eye was gone-----oh well.

Second time it was me----a double barrel shot gun---the game flew away----I am walking on the bund of this little canal----my barrel is pointed into the water----I open the barrel---BAM---and the gun fires---lucky that I had it pointed down into the water----my uncle stood by next to me.

Third time----it was a rifle---a .308 lever action side ejector---I was on a deer hunt---the rifle was hot----the deer is gone----I pull the lever down to unload the rifle----BAM it goes off----thank God---the rifle was pointing into the dirt.

All three times----no one was cleaning the shotguns or rifle---they were hot---once there was a thumb slip---other two times they fired for whatever reason----. I can count my blessing that both the times I had the barrels pointed either into the dirt or in the water.

I learnt that a loaded weapon can fire when being unloaded----bullets are no fun when they are in their zone---.

Please remember----if there is a LIVE round in the chamber----it may fire when being ejected out of the barrel----so utmost care should be taken when removing a bullet from the chamber.
