Tata Group gives USD 50 million to Harvard Business school


BOSTON: America's prestigious Harvard Business School has received a whopping USD 50 million from Ratan Tata-led Tata Group, the largest gift from an international donor in the institution's 102-year history.

The USD 50 million gift comes just days after Anand Mahindra, vice-chairman and managing director of Mahindra and Mahindra, gave USD 10 million dollar as gift to the Humanities Centre at Harvard.

Ratan Tata, Chairman of the Tata conglomerate, attended the school's Advanced Management Programme--one of three comprehensive leadership programmes offered by HBS Executive Education--in 1975.

He received the school's highest honour, the Alumni Achievement Award, in 1995.

The gift will fund a new academic and residential building on the HBS campus here for participants in the school's broad portfolio of executive education programmes.

The school hopes to break ground for the building, which will be named Tata Hall, next spring.

TATA does not have an Official word, because this tradition was started by Jamshetji Tata as he had no Children to Look after his assets, And Hence he formed a trust to look after his companies of which 65.8% of the ownership of Tata Group is Held By Charitable trust.... Now If U need Sources I can Give, But official I cant as it is as obvious as I said...

And TATA has been Donating such things to Indian Institutions aswell so we absolutely have No Problem In Him donating elsewhere as His Reputation would Increase many folds and Anything which earns Him a goodwill is Pure business in Economics Isnt it???

The TATAs have traditionally been big givers, and most of the giving has been to educational institutions. From TISS (Tata Instt. of Social Sciences) to TIFR (Tata Instt. of Fundamental Research) to Tata Memorial Centre for Cancer Research and Treatment to The National Institute of Advanced Studies and Indian Instt. of Science founded by Sir C.V. Raman. Even the funding for TERI that made Dr. Pachauri famous came from the Tatas. Even isolated colleges in India (not connected to the Tata name or Parsees for that matter) have a building or two endowed by the Tata family.And the list is very long.


In the instance above; genuine altruism of an alumnus (Ratan Tata) may have been the motive, but it does help the public image of India and Indians in general. The Tatas have (arguably) given away more than they have kept for themselves as individuals. And hardly spoken about it. Only some fading records some place or a dusty plaque some times is testimony to their munificence.

Its a private oragnization. Apart from charity it also needs to improve its brand awareness. Things are done with a foresight, things like this would help it donate more to charity in future. Its like Pakistan govt investing millions in Afganistan even though their own country is in deep debt.

Harvard is a place from where it could pick up new talent to work for their company. I have seen similar investments by Indian companies in Major B-schools in India.
