Tata Buys Majority Stake in HBL Elta Avionics
NEW DELHI - India's Tata Group of companies has acquired a 74 percent stake in HBL Elta Avionics Systems Ltd. (HELA), a Hyderabad-based company that also has equity from Israeli company Elta.
Tata Advanced Systems, part of the Tata Group of Industries, bought the stake in HELA, which manufactures radar, electronic warfare and surveillance systems, while the remaining 26 percent remains with Elta, a subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). The total amount of the transaction is not known.
This is the Tata group's second joint venture with IAI, as it already has a 74-26 partnership with the Israeli company to manufacture UAVs, electronic warfare systems, missiles, radars and homeland security systems.
Tata Advanced Systems also has a joint venture with U.S.-based helicopter maker Sikorsky Aircraft to manufacture cabins for Sikorsky S-92 helicopters.
