There has been a significant decrease in the crime rate in Karachi, with a 98 percent overall decrease in the incidents of terrorism, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) DG Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor told journalists on Sunday evening.

He said this while announcing the launch of a major operation in the Rajgal valley of Khyber Agency, code named Khyber-IV, saying Daesh had gained strength in an Afghan area close to the border.

The DG highlighted that targeted killings and extortion or kidnappings have been reduced to 97 per cent and 96 per cent respectively.

He commended the law enforcement agencies (LEAs) for their role in bringing down the crime rate in the metropolis.

Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor recalled that a meeting of the provincial apex committee held in Karachi was attended by the Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa to review the security situation.

Karachi is again a city of lights: DG Rangers

The most important decision taken in the meeting was to monitor the decisions taken in the previous apex committee meetings, he added.

“Issues prevalent in the city were among the major highlights,” the DG said. “The role of civil administration and governing bodies was also reviewed.”

He said that decisions regarding water supply, sewerage and several issues were also taken into account during the huddle.

Earlier, paramilitary Sindh Rangers Director General (DG) Maj-Gen Mohammed Saeed said that Karachi has reclaimed it status as the city of lights, which is flourishing and the citizens are no longer afraid for their lives. He was speaking at a youth festival held at Peoples Football Stadium in Lyari.

The Karachi operation was initiated in September 2013, on the directives of the federal government to purge the city of terrorist elements.

Okay living in Karachi since the beginning and yes target killings have been declined but not that much. DG Should sell the manjan in limit :P

In your opinion what percentage would you give in regards to the reduction of target killings. I'm not from Karachi that's why I need to know.

60% I'd say. Rangers have put an end to MQM Militancy but totally ignored the Ammunition piles and Militants of ANP, Sepah e Sahaba , MQM-Haqiqi and Jamiat Wing. They're still high.

This should be an easily verifiable number based on data and doing some estimates. There were around 3,000 people killed in Karachi in 2012-2013, and probably vast majority were killed as targeted killings. Let's say 2400 of those were targeted killings. If that has been reduced by 97%, that means there are around 72 targeted killings on an annualized basis now. Not exact numbers of course - if there were +-20 more killings, the numbers still roughly add up.

I am from Karachi. And the fact is that target killings have largely gone down. Exact figures won't be much different from what DG ISPR claimed. Real issues that still need attention are street crimes. If somehow they can be curbed then yes situation would be very good and acceptable. Street crimes are the real pain in the as$ for karachiites right now.

Street Crime is at peak and recently Rangers announced released their data analysis and announced their Anti Petty Crime project despite its not their duty. But Target Killing still exist. I agree that its not the way it was but 96% decline is not true.

Target killing is down by what ISPR is saying but it seem Rangers went after major groups like MQM and ANP and PPP but still not have much of a strategy against a robber or street crimes and day to day crimes

.
But killings due to mobile snatchings or other street robberies is yet to be dealt with and that is an issue in almost most of the pakistan though karachi is higher than others. Should be dealt with all over pakistan , though i dont see that happening soon and also given that police are also in bed with these small time criminals to the proper rackets.

The worst thing is these thieves shoot people if they refuse to hand over petty stuff like wallets, mobile etc etc

Target killing is mostly dead. Yes there are a few incidents but still things are very much in control. Only issue left is street crimes.

It's not dead, Sir. You can still daily hear about Assassinations.

They went after ANP at first. During Operation Rabia City. (I'm myself a major witness). Rangers whooped ANP's Liaquat Bangash and Mama Ikram group. Later one of the Rangers Col, A Wing Comd made settlements with them for gifts in return. Later he was replaced and ANP was wiped out of the Area being pushed towards the Northern Pahalwan Goth after Habib University was made next to the Area. These University owners have much influence and Habib's Reputation was at stake. Later Liaquat Bangash was killed by his own henchman and ANP went useless after the loss of its marksman. Rangers later Targeted MQM-A majorly. In a proper operation. Ignoring ANP in Pahalwan Goth, Kati Pahari, Al-Asif Square, Sipah e Sahaba at Nagan Chowrangi, Gulistan e Jauhar, Pahalwan Goth, Sohrab Goth and Nazimabad 4. PPP Militancy exists but minor spread.

? I doubt they are allowing anyone to operate. Murders over petty crimes will never be eliminated, especially in society where guns are easy to get. Target killings of terrorists and political workers is down.

The problem is our primary mentality. We curb one group raising another in return. For instance. After the fall of MQM-A, MQM-H (Haqiqi) led by Notorious Afaq Ahmad has been allowed to freely operate into the city. I can see their banners, wall chalking, manpower and growing franchises. Just the way MQM -A had. Rangers need to understand that this cult belong to the same master and have the same instinct. To Exploit the Urdu Speaking community In fact, Sepah e Sahaba is freely operating being a deadly extremist and sectarian group known for its links with TTP, Al Qaeda. The leaders of these Organizations, Aurangzeb Farooqi, Ahmad Ludhianvi and Ashraf Muawiyah move with Elite Police Convoys.

Do you deny this?
