Tamil Tiger chief killed: military sources

COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lankan special forces troops killed Tamil Tiger leader Vellupillai Prabhakaran as he tried to flee the war zone early on Monday, military sources said.

The 54-year-old who founded the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) on a culture of suicide before surrender had vowed never to be taken alive.

The LTTE on Sunday conceded defeat in a 25-year civil war, after a relentless Sri Lankan military offensive that retook the 15,000 sq km (5,792 sq miles) the rebels ran as a separate state when a 2002 truce began falling apart three years ago.

"It was confirmed Prabhakaran was killed when trying to flee in an ambulance before dawn. We are waiting for the official announcement by the president," a military source told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

Four others sources confirmed the account. There was no immediate official comment from the military. It was impossible to verify the accounts independently, since access to the war zone is sealed off to outside observers.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa declared victory on Saturday, even as the final battle in Asia's longest modern war was intensifying.

Sri Lankan special forces troops on Monday were still fighting to destroy the remnants the LTTE, dug into bunkers in 300 sq meters of sandy ground near the Indian Ocean island's northeastern coast, the military said.

News of the Tiger chief's death came as state TV for the first time broadcast images of the body of his son and heir apparent, Charles Anthony, and other dead Tigers.

He was killed overnight, the military said, along with a host of other top LTTE fighters and political cadres, including political chief B. Nadesan and spokesman Seevaratnam Puleedevan.

The imminent firing of the conventional war's last shot propelled the currency and stock markets to one-month and seven-month highs respectively.

I hope the sri lankan govt after defeating the LTTE is smart enough to address the long term grievances of the tamils and really finish the war......it only takes a small group of hardcore militants to restart the whole thing again so dont give them the opportunity to recruit by getting rid of the major tamil desires........there might have been a tamil PM-President before? i dont know but that what be good move.

Can someone please merge the thread with the sri ankan one.

COLOMBO: Sri Lankan troops recovered the body of slain rebel leader Velupillai Prabhakaran on Tuesday, a day after he was killed in the Tamil Tigers' last stand against government forces in the north, the military said. ( Watch )

The government had announced Prabhakaran's killing on Monday, but later said they had not yet found his body. A rebel official abroad denied Prabhakaran was killed and said he was in a safe place.

As speculation grew about Prabhakaran's fate, army chief Gen. Sarath Fonseka announced that his body had been recovered.

"A few hours ago, the body of terrorist leader Prabhakaran, who ruined this country, was found in the battleground," he told state television. "I take responsibility for this statement."

Fonseka's announcement came hours after President Mahinda Rajapaksa delivered a victory address to parliament, declaring that his country had been "liberated" from terrorism after defeating the Tamil Tiger rebels on the battlefield.

Recounting how the rebels, known formally as the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, once controlled a wide swath of the north and much of the east, Rajapaksa said that for the first time in 30 years, the country was unified under its elected government.

"We have liberated the whole country from LTTE terrorism," he said, declaring on Wednesday a national holiday to celebrate the armed forces.

The rebels, listed as terrorists by the US and European Union, had been fighting for three decades for a homeland for the mainly Hindu Tamil minority after decades of marginalization at the hands of governments dominated by the mainly Buddhist Sinhalese majority.

Briefly addressing parliament in the Tamil language, Rajapaksa said the war was not waged against the Tamil people.

"Our intention was to save the Tamil people from the cruel grip of the LTTE. We all must now live as equals in this free country," he said.

Rajapaksa has said in the past that he would negotiate some form of power-sharing with the Tamil community following the war and he alluded Tuesday to the need for an agreement.

"We must find a homegrown solution to this conflict. That solution should be acceptable to all the communities," he said. "That solution, which would be based on the philosophy of Buddhism, will be an example to the whole world."

Great News.
A strategik Objective compleeted by the Sirilankan Army.
:tup::tup:

Definately a good new after 30 years or so, great job done by SLA. But i dont think its completed yet, GOSL should take such steps so that such group willnot be able to raise their heard again in future.

BTW good job done by SLA again

.
Finally, a new opportunity for SL to find peace and justice. Its important that Tamils are finally given their due, mind you, LTTE came later, discrimination against Tamils came first. And its possible to turn the tide too, as evidenced in indian punjab.
